Need new transmission fluid line
« on: July 20, 2010 - 01:12:07 AM »
Well, took the car out over the weekend for its first trip since its arrival last week.  Was a blast... but looked under the car this evening and I'm loosing tranny fluid.

Come to see that the line leading into the back of the tranny (in bound line?) is rubber and was laying on the exaust... and ... melted...

I traced the line to the engine compartment and it dissapears into a hole under the master cylindar.  :clueless:  My manuals have not arrived yet so I have no clue where it goes from there.

I want to replace the rubber line with steel... there is an after market tranny cooler up front...  I'm thinking of getting a stock line to at least get it up front and then connect to the cooler via rubber if I have to.

My real question is...  who sells "stock" lines?  I have not successfully found them (I have a '73 Cuda).

Alternatively, I've laided down brake line before, I'm assuming it would be a similar process if I just get the right line to start with.  I'm hoping the manual would have the specs for the right diameter tube.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think you are looking at the speedometer drive cable, not the fluid line.

 :iagree:

Mine is melted in the same spot....dang headers :swear: it wasn't seated in the clip, popped it in there and aint had a problem since, melted housing and all

Trace the tranny lines from the bottom of the radiator back to the tranny and I bet you will find the problem :2thumbs:

:iagree:  But if you are still looking for tranny cooler lines, Dave from rosevillemoparts.com can help you out.  He is a member on this site, see the post in the "companies" section to see his offerings!

Thanks guys...   Yes I am leaking fluid... and yes for some reason the tube goes into the firewall... I don't have my jack stands yet so I have not been able to effectively trace the tube out of the cooler...  it runs under the engine and out of sight.

I looked at Roseville but didn't realize there were more pages (duh)... only 10 per page?
Herb's parts looks like a great link too..

You guys are very hepful... I'm now deep into my car... and that's a good thing ...  I feel like it's my baby now.  :)

I feel like a noob... because I am..  :)

Those of you who suggested speedometer were right...

Looking through the manuals that just arrived I see that tranny fluid can get into the speedometer cable if one of the seals in the "adapter" goes bad.

That makes more sense...  It's possible the fluid has been there a while and the melted cable brought it out for all to see.  I'm reading up on replacing the seal.

On a scale of 1-10 (10 hardest) what is the skill level needed to pull the speedometer pinion gear, replace the seal and put it all back together without destroying something?

Its not a bad job, but having your car up on a rack helps!

That's a easy task... hardest part is jacking the car up and putting jack stands under it.

You should be able to reach up under the dash and unplug the cable from the back of the guage cluster.... fish the cable back through the fire wall to the engine bay... climb under the car and trace the line to the tranny and unfasten it.

Thanks Mike!  A friend of mine said to just replace the speedo cable and test it before going after the seal.  Sounds like you are thinking the same way.
I'll give it a try and report back.

Much appreciated guys!
