No Power??
« on: July 20, 2010 - 11:29:30 AM »
Dumb question:
But I used a power pack to try and start my 71 Cuda today as the battery was low and was slow turning over. It cranked over a few times and I think that I probably flooded it so I let it sit for a bit. When I went back to try and start it using the power pack there was no power at all when I turned the key on??  Even the radio will not play as it's like the power has stopped flowing? I checked and the power pack is charged, adjusted the battery cables, so that's not the problem with no power getting to the ignition when I turn the key. Any ideas as I wonder if there might be a sensor that's failed, loose wire..Etc!!

Thanks
"Tim"

it could be that the fusable link at the start relay or the connection at the blukhead plug may not be connecting

look on the drivers side inner fender for the fusible link and use a multimeter to check continuity ,this link will help

and check the bulkhead plug connections like CP suggested

I found the wire with fusable line written on it attcheded to the drivers side wheel well. So got that part done. Just need to know what I now need to check for now to try and solve my problem?? It there an actual fuse some place on this line that I need to look at to see if it's broken??

Many Thanks As Always!!

Check battery connections, and clean the cable ends and battery terminals, then re-check your electrical stuff (12 volts at battery, good ground, etc.). This sounds like a bad connection at the battery, likely corrosion between the cable and terminal, due to storage.

Have already checked cables and that part is fine. Just need to know about this fusable line as I think that's where the problem is??
If this helps anyone to assist me. I left the battery hooked up and was going to maybe tighten the bolt on the wheel well where that fusable line is attached and as soon as the wrench touched the bolt the engine cranked over?? Does this help anyone in narrowing down my problem??

Shorting the starter relay from the battery terminal to the starter terminal is what happened, normal & this is before the Fusible Link

Ok. Now with that fusable link line found. Is there a fuse or something that I need to check that might be broken? Guess my question is what exactly do I need to check for to see if something is broken / needs replacement so I can start the car!

Thanks One aND All.

The blue wire is the "fuse"..The wire itself is designed to burn out...Check it' continuity from the relay to where it plugs into the harness, red wire on my car.   If no connection there's the problem & you can get fusible link at the local auto parts store but you will have to transfer the connectors over.   If it's good inspect the red wire where it goes through the bulkhead connector & the connectors in the plug, common place for them to fail... If that's good dive under the dash & check that wire on the harness at the bulkhead, then finally at the ammeter, it's not uncommon for those connections to be loose or burn off.

All the wires that I can see look good up to the wrapped harness area? If that fusible link wire is the problem will it show as fried or something? Wonder if I just order a new replacement fusible link wire that might solve my problem?? Looks like year one has them on their site for about $20 that look the same as the one on my car!!

Test with a multimeter or test light....don't have one, get one. $20 may not fix. Diagnose 1st.

you can just buy fusable link wire & just solder a piece in to fix it , install a jumper & see if everything works again
