413 Valve cover
« on: December 29, 2001 - 04:12:14 PM »
Well the story goes as is. I found this 413 it is in a sport fury and this guy who had it said it was a 440, but turned out to be a 413. So i offered him 150.00 dallors for it, he glady accepted. But said he wanted the valve covers. Any suggestions why?
Are the valve cover holes different? I am think there a only 4 holes to hold the valve cover down! If so, Which holes a there????

Thanks

The early heads used only the 4 middle bolt holes & the newer cover have the holes in the same place so they will fit but have the added holes in the lower corners. He probably wants keep them because the old stlye cover are probably hard to find in good condition. The heads may have the removable rocker shaft pedestals too!! You can interchange newer heads onto the 413 block as it will probably have the small size valves in the heads. ;)

I agree with Psycho, the four bolt valve covers are less common that later styles. The reason they can be considered a little more valuable? You guessed it, most Max Wedges used the same four bolt style! Every big block prior to mid year 1964 used the four bolt style and the bolt on rocker stands and shafts, later big block heads went to cast in stands and six bolt valve covers..

Also, the heads you have are more than likely the small port closed chamber 2406516 castings, these are basically considered low performance and are not much good for serious performance without some serious porting work. I'd swap them out for some 1967 hp 440 heads, casting #2780915, these use the same closed chamber design so it won't lower your compression using the stock pistons in your 413 as the later 2843906 and other open chamber HP designs will do.

These 67 heads are not as common so are usually expensive, changing pistons will allow you to use the very similar much more common "906" open chamber heads or the later model but also very similar "452" heads which utilize unleaded valve seats from the factory.

Good luck!

there is one head used in 1962 the # is 2206324 and it is also a closed chambered head but has the 2.08 int and 1.74 exh valves in it so it would be a good head to work with
