Here is the  passenger side welded in, and coated with some self-etch for protection. None of the welds are finished, so don't judge it to harshly!
I took my time, trimming the back section, so that the weld lines would line up on top of each other. I don't know if I said it before, but when welding with weld-thru primer, expect a few burn throughs. It seems to add a lot of heat to the weld, had to crank my welder down 2 heat settings from normal for 18 gauge.  More to come soon.

Going to post more pics in about an hour. Gotta eat dinner first. This is of the passenger side motor mount, still building the drivers side.

Here is my most recent work on the engine mounts.

Cut out the old one.

I left the 2 side rails they happen to be 3 and 1/8 inch appart perfect for building my new spool mounts into.

I then lowered the engine into position, remeasured everything and proceeded to make cardboard templates for the pieces. I cut them from a strip of 3/16 X 4' X 4" steel, and test fit them repeatedly until the fit was perfect.

I hope by next weekend to finish the mounts so stay tuned! :working:

Looking good!  :2thumbs:  You might want to bolt on the headers now before you weld anything. BB and headers do not play nice stock never mind moving thigs around?   :grinno:

Well I've gotten some more work done. I started by taking many measurements between the block mount and K-Frame on the drivers side. This time around I will design the block side first and the motor side last. As you can see in the photo, its a tight fit.

It was difficult to figure out how to best make this mount, but I came up with a decent idea, I think lol. So  I would build a box where the mount will drop into then section the original mount pad to fit it, without any major loss in strength.

I knew that accuracy would be key here so I made a template to cut the side sections.

I then cut the rough shapes from some flat stock.

I massaged each side, by filing them, until each one was arrow strait and matched the template perfectly.
Once all my tolerances were less then a  32nd of an inch, I mocked it all up and tacked it together.

After It was tacked up I removed the bushing section and replaced it with a stack of slip collers and washers so  the heat wouldn't warp it to much. Then I finish welded everything.

I then replaced the Bushing when it cooled to check the fit. I was a little tight but not unreasonabley so, I may use a half inch stud and a couple of nuts to open it up a 32nd. Just so getting the engin in and out later will be more friendly.

In this photo I am doing my 2-handed best to show you roughly where it goes.

As usual thanks for the compliments, there's more coming soon! :working:

Well I got the k-Frame section welded in, and then I made these little yellow templates for the legs that go between the spool and the engine mount.

I very carefully cut them out with a sawsall, then I ground the sides flat with my trusty snag grinder, followed by liberal amounts of hand filing to get them super strait, here's the  finished sections.

When I made them I purposely left them too thick, by about an 1/8th inch. I did this so I could fine tune the angle of the oil pan rails from side to side.  I had to wedge them in the car between the engine mount and the spool tube; undo the chain holding the engine; the weight of the motor on the spool would compress it; which would give me an accurate post-assembled angle, and then check the angle with a magnetic angle finder. Then I had to pull them out grind and file accordingly until I got the measurement to a perfect 0 degrees on both rails. Once that was done I spot welded each leg in 4 locations, I was then able to lift the motor up and pull the mount from the car for finish welding.  Once it welded good and solid, I cut small rectangular peice from some scrap and made a top for it to add some strength.

I am excited to say that my car is now a roller again :jumping:, I have been doing some other work on the side as well. Here is another shot of my shifter handle after going on a diet (lost 2 lbs. 7 oz.). It looks great in the car and matches the steering wheel (both are gun-drilled).

I have even squeezed in some metal finishing on the trans tunnel and it looks much better, however I'm still have more to go. When I am finished with that I will post some more pics of it top and bottom.

Thank you, I retired from the Army this past spring. There will be more yet to come, but I am in need of a couple of surgery's. I have been unable to use power tools lately because of nerve damage. They are scheduled for this April, until then I will be patiently planning and plotting all the little details.:)

Nice work, and the pics are great documenting the process.   That's what Hot Rodding is all about, taking an idea and making it work.  Good luck with the surgery's.

Well I am back up and running again, and so is work on the car.

Close up of the floorpan to tunnel seam.

Underside view of tunnel.

Last but not least a firewall view.

It feels great to get back to work. Next weekend I'll start TIG welding the seams on the K frame and finish welding the new engine mount brackets. I will be getting new photos posted every weekend, hopefully, so keep em peeled! (eyes or tires its all good  :working: :burnout:)
