plug wires, distributor
« on: July 22, 2010 - 11:15:53 PM »
Like an idiot, I removed my plug wires and distributor with out marking anything. I have since rotated the engine so I have a 50/50 chance on putting the distributor in wrong. is there any type of diagram that I can look at to put the plug wires on to the correct place on the distributor? Any help would be appreciated.

the plug wires can go anywhere on the cap
so you need to pull #1 spark plug & stick your finger in the hole & crank the engine over until you feel pressure then bring the timing mark up to TDC & install the dist with the rotor point to where #1 wire is on the cap , re-install the plug

I see. So that will take care of it possible being 180 degree's off. Just curious, where is the #1 plug located on the block and the where is it on the rotor? Thanks for your help

If you look at your engine, #1 cylinder is always located
furthest ahead. If you look at your Valve Covers, you will see that the Left side valve cover leads the Right Side by a measurable and very noticable difference.

Also, when cranking over the engine with your finger in #1 spark plug hole, make sure the coil wire to distributor is removed so the engine doesn't start (for safety and very obvious).

Cool! Thanks. So with the cap off, I turn the metal point of the distributor to the #1 spot and make sure that plug wire goes to the #1 plug?

Righto as long as #1 cylinder is at TDC....you want to point it 10-15 degrees before(roughly 1/2 way between 2&1) so your timing will be close enough to start easy.

not quite , bump tythe engine over until you have at TDC # 1 ,then the dist will drop in facing in either of 2 positions , then connect #1 wire where the rotor is pointed & adjust the body of the dist so the reluctor lines uo with the pick up coil & adjust timing once it is running
