Hinges don't match!
« on: July 23, 2010 - 09:14:11 AM »
There is a problem with closing the hood with my '72 Challenger where the hood stays up on on the right side and needs to be pressed down to make it sit right.  I know the hood should get adjusted to a certain extent but upon closer look there is a difference between the two hinges where they don't mirror each other.

The right hinge has a longer plate connecting the upper and lower arms that mesh together with teeth.  The left plate measures about 3-1/8" long while the right one measures 4".  Why the difference and is there an explanation.

Different years had different styles, maybe yours are mixed.

I had the same problem when I first got my car home.  :banghead:
The driver's side would only go down, even after adjusting it to its fullest extent of travel, by pushing it down into place.
Turns out someone a long time ago had changed the hinge with a Charger hinge.  :smokin:  :screwy:

you also could have a later b-body mixed in. B and E look very close.

I've got an extra set of hinges that came off a '72 with the bulge hood if your interested.  They are some of the parts that I have no idea why I needed them.

Your hinges are 2 different years. The driver's side has the teeth that mesh together and the right side is the kind without the teeth.  You still may be able to lower the passenger side though.

Chryco showed me the adjustment with my hood. You have to raise the front of the hinge UP to make the spring go over center then pull itself down.  Loosen the passenger hinge's 3 mounting bolts, have somebody stand at the front and push the hood up, while you tighten the bolts.  The hood should now close farther down.

Thanks guys.  I believe I have a '71 left hinge and a '72 right hinge.  Thanks for the help.
