Adding tranny cooler-- fitting question
« on: July 26, 2010 - 08:29:37 PM »
I bought a Deralled tranny cooler #13104 9I think it is the one Terry recommended) last fall and had intentions of installing it and never did...mostly because I want to be sure I do it right and didnt have the time to invest into figuring it out.

The kit comes with some hose and an adaptor for adapting it to the radiator fitting, assuming I have the correct size.  The adaptor is said to be /2"-20 thread which will fit "most vehicles with 5/16" tranny lines".

I measured my lines and they do appear to be 5/16". (727 tranny, repop stock lines)

The adaptor , assuming it will fit, should make a nice connection at the radiator.

But they give you nothing as far as fittings to secure the other hose to the tranny line, which i assume you have to cut the end off of.

I was wondering if there is a good way to use some sort of adaptor so as to retain the tranny line uncut and still connect up to the cooler "just in case"...I hate to cut a relatively new line like that....plus, their are no barbs or anything to help seal the hose.  All the instructions say is "connect the hose to the disconnected trans line".......it doesnt mention cutting...

What have y'all done as far as that hose-to-line connection (the cool/return-to-trans side) ?  Also, anyone have pics on how they routed their hoses?

Thanks all.

Yea i know the issue i didnt want to cut mine so i went to our local speed shop , and found the fittings, and a little spacer to hold the two together, the fittings are available ,and you will have to bend the end a with a tubing bender, (be careful),and it will bend, just dont kink it,and remember on the return side it stays like factory so you only have to worry about one side,

and it there is ever an issue i can very easily by pass the cooler and run it through the radiator like factory,it works great i drove from denver to vegas and back no leaks, and the car runs soooo much cooler i also have an oil cooler and those two units really keep a 440 cool in the hot desert sun :cooldancing:

Check with your local NAPA, only place I've been able to find 5/16 fittings. See if they have a barbed fitting for your 1/2-20 line

The fitting that Wade is showing you is exactly what you are wanting. Drewcranes looks nice also.

Thanks guys

My line seems to measure 5/16 (OD) or there abouts...

Do you know the size of the actual female (non barbed end) there in that pic?

The hose in the kit says its 11/32" hose.....I guess I need that size barb?

Would like to have the fittings prior to taking it all apart and starting this "just in case" I have trouble finding the fittings.

So this fitting threads onto the fitting end of the line that is connected directly? I guess then you just tweak the line enough to allow hose hookup and clearing of stuff?

Grrrrrrrrrrrr.  Just tried 5 different auto/hardware stores including a NAPA.  Nothing.

im not sure of the fitting sizes , but im sure you can find the right barbed end fitting,if you are using rubber line, i used AN fittings and the steel line because its clost to the road and rubber is good but steel is better, for my use,

and yes you will have to tweak the hard line a little it hook it up,do you have a supplier locally? NAPA?

The only diameter they refer to is the 5/16 for the line, nothing on the barb but 11/36 is just a smidgen larger so I don't see fitment being a problem, rubber lines stretch or can be squeezed a little.

I have searched high and low....two napas (they looked at me like I was nuts), several gardware stores and a Fastenall.....

I am THIs close to saying "f it" and just cutting the tibe and flaring it and sticking the hose on. Seems like the hose includeed is gonna be big but they keep talking about 5/16" lines, so I guess not.

I figure I can just keep the cut-off end and use a compression fitting union to stick it back on if I ever need to.

Unless I can find it online and available quickly, I mean.

Nuttin' is easy.  LOL
