park brake adjustment

I know this is basic stuff but before I start can some give me tips on adjusting the park brake. Also should the "brake" light come on when the park brake is depressed..not working??

Lamp would still be operable even if the cables are not connected or adjusted, a simple grounding switch is on the pedal mechanism.    Adjust the tension of the cable under the car, there are 2-types, give me a few minutes & I'll find what I can.

seems most of the pictures are gone....here is the one piece setup I have, I think the 70 models used something quite different
...see adjusting hook & adjusting nut,

I'll try the adjustment nut, hopefully that is all that is needed.. if mine is like that [74] ?
is there adjustment to be made in the rear brakes?
Fingers crossed the switch is a simple fix.
Not far off getting it licensed now.... :woo:

There is an adjuster for one each of rear brakes but not for the parking brake aspect, although that adjustment may effect the parking brake...if you know what I mean.

Yes, after the brakes are installed/adjusted initially they have self adjusters so just tighten your nut & all should be well.

I dont suppose you know if the brake pedal [not the park brake] has some sort of adjustment? I was under there and I cant remember seeing anything? I just need to bring it up a bit ..

Brake pedal is not adjustable that I'm aware of.

One area that is overlooked is if the drums are too much over size, that is over .060". The cross reaction bar just under the rear wheel cylinder has a slot in it and when the adjustment on the brakes is way out the gap increases, this gap has to be closed up before the park brake can start to work. Just tightening the cable can take up this gap but then the leverage is lost inside the drum, the park brake lever on the shoe should be back as far as possible. I have welded up the cross reaction bar slot to close the gap so the park brake will work and hold, there should be a slight gap. Hope my explanation helps and makes sense.   :cheers:

I think I would have to see that one Dave  :dunno: I have adjusted the adjustment nut and that seems to have done it however its just barely holding on my sloped driveway.. should be enough.. I fixed that brake light problem, the globe was gone behind the dash  :clueless: I Just managed to squeeze my fingers behind to fix...

And now onto the washer ...
