Wanted to hear which primer and paint you all have used on front and rear rubber bumpers and what were experiences, good and bad... I finally finished painting the cuda and need to add the bumpers.

I used Evercoat FeatherFill polyester primer--the same stuff I used on the body. The bumper was an original and not very rubbery, so after straightening it and filling gouges, I used the FeatherFil to get it level because the polyester has a good deal of flex to it anyway. I don't know what would happen if it got a good impact and I don't want to find out either, but we're happy with the results.

I told my paint guy that it needed a flex agent(per the instructions) and he said that it was very common with all the plastic and rubber on todays cars.

The reason I am asking is that I had already sanded the front bumper and primed it with PPG Epoxy Primer. I seems to be adhering fine, but Gene called me (He makes them) and said that I need to sand the Epoxy off and go get a Urethane Flex Primer instead. I can bend the rubber on the side and the epoxy will not crack or peel.

I already have about 16 hours in this bumper and would hate to re-sand it all.

Opinions...

He should know however have you asked your local paint supply place what they would use? The reason I ask is with all the rubber & plastic car parts these days it may have a flex agent in your primer.

I'd go with what you've already done. The elastomeric bumpers are nowhere as flexible as today's hollow plastic bumpers.

I would listen to Gene on this one and its flex isn't so much as getting banged into as it would expansion and contraction from sunlight and heat.I haven't a lot of knowledge on this but when I was younger my parents had a 69 GTO which had the elastomeric frt. bumper and it started to crack the paint after a few years(where it was repainted).I will also let you guys in on something I have been watching with my Iroc R/T,it has the typical for the time paint peeling or flaking off still going on.Now this isn't happening on the plastic nose or rear bumper,its happening on the steel body panels.I have actually seen the paint on a cool morning pop off as the sun starts warming it.Sounds crazy but the primer is still soft and the paint is hard(I can leave a mark in the primer with my finger nail)One thing I have learned over the years is never skimp on the prep work.This is just my 2 cents.

So, I made it to the local PPG paint shop on Friday. My paint guy says that as far as flex primer, they do make an additive. However, you add the additive to the primer and paint prior to application. He also says that the flex agent will evaporate from the paint within a week or two and the paint. Now, he also says that with todays modern paints, "They are designed to be more flexible due to all of the plastic and flexible parts on today's late model cars."

So, it sounds like the epoxy is the way to go and since I am not handling a complete nose off of a modern car, I will not have near as much flex going on. So, I think I will be OK. The worse that could happen is that I have to sand the paint back off a few years from now. LOL
