Heater core replacement
« on: August 02, 2010 - 03:29:44 PM »
I just finished replacing the heater core non-A/C . I did this 24 years ago in my first Challenger and didn't have good memories about the job. I STILL don't have good memories about that job! YUCK!  What a pain in the butt job! I'd rather pull the engine than do that again! LOL
I'd like to meet the Einstein engineer that designed that system and make him into a farmer....by giving him a couple of acres... :grinyes:
Sorry just needed to vent some... :blah: :pullinghair:

What kind of fastener held the heater coar to the main heater box?  What I mean is there is a bracket that is brazed to the inlet and outlet tubes....what fastener was used to attach that part of the heater coar to the box?

Mine had what looks like a hardware store nut/bolt.  I'm assuming dad replaced the correct fasteners years ago when he changed out the coar.  Just curious.

It's not a bad job when the box is out sitting on a bench.

Oh once you get it apart the actual heat core is easy to replace, just one screw holding it in place. It's the putting it back together that frustrated me! Getting the vent flap in the hole and getting the hook/rod thing back up in the vent hole all while your trying to get a clip or two to hold it all together....... :grinno:

Brad,

Ummm. hate to ask but, why did you replace your heater core? Was it leaking? My heater doesn't work, so no need for my heater core, but I just know that sucker is probably 40 years old, so I dread the smell of sugar in my passenger's side seat.    :22yikes:

Yep it leaked... I had everything all finished, washed it for the first time ever and was taking it to it's first cruise night and it started pouring out on my newly installed carpet! :grinno:
I sarcastically thought to myself "Oh ya right, sure! ...a part I hadn't replaced yet.." :smilielol:
So I just looped the heater hoses and went to the cruise night anyhow!
Not that I need a heater at the moment or anything, but the new core was staring at me asking to be installed.

A non a/c core is actually quite easy to change. Changing out the ac heater core is tuffer.  What troubles did you have?  I know in a cuda it is done in a couple of hours :2thumbs:

Ya it took me a couple of hours or less too , but it was frustrating trying to get the flap in the hole, top hanger hook thing and start a few of those stupid clips all at the same time. I had to take a few "walks" to take a break as I was really frustrated!  all good now though! Good for another 40 years I hope! :smilielol:
