Frustrating day

 :banghead:  Worked today to fix an engine mount and trans mount issue...and then install a new exhaust system.

Well the engine mount and trans mount took a little more time than I hoped, but I got it done, first time in my ownership (19 yrs) that the car has had a decent trans mount.

Then on to the new summit exhaust system.  Well I got all the pipes installed with only one minior fitment issue.  I went to install the mufflers (turbo style behind the axle) and the fitment is just wrong.  The damn mufflers are to long.  I tried to use the provided mount and see if I could cut the pipe to fit, but no chance, the muffler inlet would need to sit right at the bend in the pipe.  Just will not work. 

SO now my car that was in drivable condition is layed up untill I sort all this out...NOT happy!!! :swear: :swear:

I am going to call summit in the AM and see if we can sort this out.

Just had to vent..

Can you make or modify the mount? A buddy gave me mounts from a Dart I believe and I cut and welded them to make them work. Your only limited by your imagination? Can you post a picture?

No pics right now... it is not really the mount, it is the length of the muffler.  In order to make it fit, and have the turn down come out in the right spot, it just will not work. 

I will try to take some pics tomorrow.

That sucks man, do you still have the old exhaust? If ya do, just slap that back on there till ya get your new system worked out :2thumbs:

Just run headers or straight pipes and drive it like ya stole it!

I got probably the same exhaust system you got. Never fit right and im still unhappy with it. I had to do many modifications just to get it to kinda fit. Im tossing this one out and going with a Pypes exhaust soon. Anything has to be better. And those mufflers are garbage. Just dont sound right to me. So I swapped them over to a Thrush turbo welded, much much better:)

 :bricks1: Tough break with the mufflers.  :banghead:  Wonder if they may have sent the wrong mufflers. I bought a Flowmaster H pipe kit through Summit for my 72 B body and it fit perfectly, well the 3" exhaust pipe on the passenger side is a bit low, but that was due to K member configeration not a kit problem.  I bet a Flowmaster mufferler would fit, they are a bit shorter than most..................and boy do they sound great.  :2cents:

I bought the Magnaflow compleate stainless system. I had to do some cutting and welding to make it fit nice onto the headers but the rest of the system went on great, and I LOVE the sound!

Yeah, thanks guys..stil frustrated about this.

Summit says they are the right mufflers and some cutting is required as it is a multipurpose system (cuda and chally).  I still don't see how the mufflers will fit between the rear axel and the valance.

Dave, do you happen to have the dimensions of your mufflers (new or old) or some pics?

What if....on the tailpipe your cut say 1/2" off both the tailpipe and the muffler, that should gain your something? Then I see a clamp above the rear end , is there a joint there? If so cut some off there too , if by doing that it places the muffler higher ( and it will) twist the pipe to lower the muffler? doing this might help?

to me it looks like an easy fix at the muffler shop, going by your photos.  Take it to s shop, you just be happy when you drive away

I agree, I thought the same thing, why not cut part of the pipe that comes off the exhaust manifold/header to make room for the mufflers? 

Is it that your just hung up on the fact that the kit dont fit perfect?  To me if its the difference of 2" inches of extra pipe and that is all the kit has for issues, I think you did pretty good?

I have heard that the summit kits are pretty good as far as fitment issues go?  I think you could get out the old hacksaw and lose two inches of pipe you will be in there like swim wear!

Yeah I thought that might work too.  But I need more like 6 inches.

The clamp on the over the axel pipe is holding it to the hanger.  That pipe is also all the way forward and is just about hitting the sway bar.

I just don't see how the mufflers will fit without at least a new over the axel pipe.

from your picture looks like you could cut 4" off the pipe that goes over the rear end? ( straight section) If you had to you could also cut a section out of the straight section that goes down on a 45 DEG angle and  reweld ? Doing that will give you aprox half the distance back. Meaning if you cut off 2" it will move the whole assembly back about 1" ( being around 45 deg) then to lower the tail pipe you would have to twist the pipe .
