Pypes Performance Exhaust System
« on: August 06, 2010 - 06:24:26 PM »
after running into major fitment issues with the summit exhaust system for my cuda (see my other post) I am looking at getting a pypes performance system (returning the summit system).

Has anyone used this system.  Any thoughts on fitment with this system...will it fit?  How loud is this system?

Thanks,

Jason

Don't you have a local shop you can just take the car too, or take the Summit kit and have them put it in?

I have the 2.5" with street pro muffler, these are straight through with perforated tube & I suppose some kind of sound dampening material.....sounds about like stock.
Chose these as the most cost effective stainless system. Nothing much to the installation although the generic hangers they supplied while very nice were not of much use, I ended up buying other stuff to try to utilize the OE mounting points.  The X-pipe forward seemed pretty generic with cutting to be done to the 45-els to get to align with the cross-member openings, the mufflers had special notches to fit in the pockets where the original resonators went. I fidgeted with the fitment of the over the axle pipes & hanger placement a bunch as they seemed to encroach on the shocks....Al in all I am pleased but would not say they were very custom fit except the mufflers....& the mufflers were no things of beauty as they had sprayed the welds of the notched areas silver & the rest was kind of grungy looking, cleaned up well enough for a driver.
Give me a few min. & I'll link some pics.

About the only pics I have were made prior to final install , I'll get more if you want.

Not part of the kit I got their stainless collector reducers & bought an extra 180- to fab a connection to the system at the cross-member

You can tell it's not to loud, I have 1 5/8 headers

You know it's got power when it blows the gaskets right off.  :lol2:

Sounds great.  :2thumbs:

Yes, I have the standard Hooker Headers & they do not line up with the cross-member opening, it may have been possible to go straight under the cross-member and not fabed anything  but I wanted the most ground clearance.

I had this same issue with my Hookers on the Roadrunner.  I wonder if the other brands (Dougs, TTI, etc.) have this same problem or do they manage to line up the collectors with the indentions on the cross member.  I know the exhaust shop had to weld up an ugly looking elbow to get it to go through the opening like yours without going under the regular part of the frame & hanging too far down.  The more I learn the more I think I'll be going with Doug's or TTI next time.

I doubt if any line up with the cross-member openings, even the OE head pipes have a squiggle right there.

That's good info, thanks.  Makes you kind of wonder why no one has come up with a modified or aftermarket cross member that allows for straight back pipes.  The squiggle never looked right to me...

My guess would be that the torsion bars are in the way!  Might work if you use one of the aftermarket front suspensions???
