1961 413 engine and trans.
« on: August 09, 2010 - 08:55:09 AM »
A friend has given me a 61 413 out of an imperial. The problem is that it comes with a push button trans. Does anyone know of a trans that would bolt up to this motor and can be used in my cuda. I think it would be nice to have a big block that produces 350 HP from the start and 10.1 compression. So I would build it up a little on a rebuild, the car will only be for cruising. But if its a bad idea let me know....

The 413 is dimensionally identical to the 440. This means that the trans is a bolt-on deal, from ANY later bigblock. The typewriter trans is special, and would be a great boon to a Nostalgia-class dragracer. Talk trade to the right people, and you might get exactly what you want, with little cash outlay. As for 413 parts availability, as long as you aren't looking to rebuild the engine, it's dimensionally identical to the 440. Heads, intakes, and other external parts bolt right on. Rebuilding can get dicey, as 413 pistons aren't high-demand items. This is why most raised-deck bigblocks are 440s, now.

The 1961 Engine's CRANKSHFT is what's called "Extended Flange" and WILL NOT BOLT UP to a later model 727...The only way it would at all, is if the crank from a 440 was swapped in..

Begining in 1962, the 413 got the NON-EXTENDED flage crank...Otherwise, that engine is useless for a musclecar...Will cost Crazy money just to overhaul, let alone make any decent power out of it...

Thank you for the information, I wanted to look into it before I spent any money on the motor.... So now I will look for another core.... Now is there any advantage to having a 383 over a 440?

Weight. Everything else about the 383 is seen as a downside. I like the lower deck, the narrower engine, and the short stroke that allows smallblock-like rpm.

I have a 440 that routinely sees up side of 7000 RPM's, but No need to spin your engine that high if you have enough motor...

It's not so much about ultimate rpm, as it is about the rapidity of those mounting revs. There is no replacement for displacement, but the question was asked. Weight-saving measures can be applied to a 440 or other RB to cut heft to less than that of a B block. Of course, there's always the stroker smallblock route, too.

If you got the $$$, they have a 572 RB engine that weighs less than a SB stock engine....Rotating assy weighs less than a 340.....

It's all about the $$$.....
