Still overheating!!!! *%&$@#!
« on: August 10, 2010 - 06:54:55 PM »
Ok-`70 Duster drag car, stock `76 low compression engine from a van with a four barrell intake and carb and headers, new 22" aluminum radiator(Northern or similar brand can`t remember),good 8 blade water pump, new 16" electric fan @ 2000cfm,running 10 degrees advance. We also just did the head gaskets as there were bubbles in the water and we did see evidence of leaking between cylinders.Just ran engine at for 20-30 minutes and the whole time the temp slowly rose till I had to shut it down @ 220.I currently have a 160 thermostat in it but have also tried various restrictor plates with the same results. What the heck is wrong???My only thought is maybe the cheap radiator is crap and not efficient enough but I think others run them without any issues.I may try backing off the timing to 4 or 6 degrees but otherwise I`m stumped!

Get rid of the electric fan and put on a stocker with shroud. Is your rad clean inside the tubes?

I'd say the electric fan too, I have some spacers and a flex fan here.  I have a clutch fan set up cheap too.LOL

Count me in , electric fans will not move enough air to keep an engine cool when not moving
get a 6-7 blade clutch fan & a shroud

Rad is brand new, plenty of guys seem to run electric fans without a problem and I bought a decent one flowing enough cfm-or so i thought.I`ll pull it out and try a clutch fan with a shroud and see if it cures the problem.

running 10 degrees advance.I may try backing off the timing to 4 or 6 degrees but otherwise I`m stumped!

Backing off the timing will only make it hotter.  Since you have that engine. Try a distributor with a vacuum advance hooked to manifold vacuum. It will advance your timing at idle way above 20 degrees , which might help.

I only ran electric fans and water pumps on the race car when I wanted to cool it down without it running, so I see how you want that setup but you have to try a different fan and or radiator like everyone says.

I have NEVER had luck with an electric fan.   They just dont push or pull well enough for road use.

I run a Chevy HHR fan and an aluminum rad, and so far so good! The temps do creep up in heavy traffic but only to about 200 so far? ( I have a 195 TS ) I don't know if this helps but I run an auto and run a separate tranny cooler ? ( never goes through the rad)

Yes, I also run a transmission cooler that is separate from the rad.

I run 2X12" electric fans,BC crossflow rad. on a 340+.030,Aluminum heads/intake. HV water pump.Got two temp. guages. One mech.,one elec.  On 100*+ days I'm drivin' around at 190*  In traffic.  It's never gone over. Even up in the canyon on "hot laps" she stays below.  :dunno:

Are you running the brass style thermostat or the stant style, the brass one (you may see them sold under Mr. Gasket or Robertshaw) will flow more coolant and may help and vice versa if your car is picky on the coolant flow rate. The stant style is a flat thermostat with a 1" or so opening valve while the robertshaw style is maybe a 1.5" opening valve. IMO you shouldn't have cooling issues with a low compression motor at 10 degrees initial.

I've found that some engines just run hotter than others and I haven't found anything that will keep them from doing it...I too have tried EVERYTHING with the 440 in "Christine" and she still runs 220 idling...The Dart motor runs 230-240 and I have a mechanical fan with shroud, Aluminum radiator, 180 TS, AND a "helper" Electric fan...Damn thing STILL runs hot..

The 440 in the General Lee won't get over 190 I don't care what I do..Agreed, it is frustrating..

I think it's the blocks and some are just cast thinner where it counts and therfore, they run hotter..

Typically, but not exclusively, overheating while sitting still is inadequate air flow while overheating at speed is inadequate coolant flow. They can also work in combinations to create more difficult to nail down issues. Did you change pulleys at all?

Stock low comp. engine with stock pulleys so I`m baffled as to why an electric fan is not sufficient but I`ll try the clutch fan from my cuda today or tommorow and see if it makes any difference.

:iagree:  and tuning issues can add heat, to little timing advance, to lean fuel mixture
