Make sure yo use locktite on it too.  A friend of mine first lost the nut, then the whole yoke pulled out on a long trip back from a car show. Had to have it towed all the way home.

I see they make a tool for holding the yoke, I used a large pipe wrench. You may need to do this to torque down.  Also I had a puller that fit the yoke to ease it off, something like the pic below.

Uh Gentlemen, I don't wanna rain the parade here, but if this is an 8 3/4 rear with say a Crush sleeve, then you might wanna mark that pinion nut and the end of the splines as to make SURE you get it back EXACTLY where it came off....

Otherwise, you hammer it back on there too tight and say hello to a whole new set of problems....

I hear what your saying but it's my understanding he is putting on a new yoke. So marking it won't help. Just don't use the impact to tighten up the nut. Find a spec to torque it to?( What that would be I don't know?) If your going to reuse the nut put some silicone on the bottom face of the nut. As said above loctite is a good idea too. I just had to do that with my other Car ( 9" ford) as it was leaking past the splines.

Torque specs are notoriously unreliable.

Looks like I'm gonna hafta order one.   Not sure which one is right. It's an 8 3/4. How do I tell which center it is? probably a 489. dont see those exact numbers anywhere though.  from what I'm seeing out there for sale it's a 10 spline ?   And I havn't found the seal either.  Is billet worth it?  Any suggestions on where to order from for this stuff?  Eventually I'm planning on getting a Moser fabricated 8 3/4 with new axles. But This really needs to be replaced soon!   :1zhelp:      Thanx all!     R/T

I cant see how many splines it has. Going to pull it a little to see what to order. Thanks Brad good link! That's where I was at. Mine now has that dust shield?   Must be OEM?   Any suggestions?  :dunno:    Cant believe how much of a difference even just pinching it in there made. I'd like to order like NOW.  :feedback:

The old yolk has a 29 on the corner... I'm guessing 29 spline then(?)   Now...7260,7290...   Those are u joint #'s? Not sure on which one to get.Got a tko-500 with a driveshaft/ujoint already in it.  Guessn' 7290 from what I've found searchn' .

the torque spec is 250 ft lbs , if it is a 489 carrier it will have a crush sleeve , if you take the yolk off the crush sleeve has to have exactly the same pressure on it or you will have a problem with the brgs . It is best to either replace the cruh sleeve & start again or install a spacer & shims . The 7260 is 2.125 inside ear to ear , the 7290 is 2.625 inside ear to ear

How do I tell which center it is? probably a 489.
On the left side, low, close to the yoke will be some #'s. You'll find 489,or 742, or 741 within that number.  :2cents:

ok so...   It's an 8 3/4  with a 489 case.    I ordered the totally wrong part. (29-7290) It's a 10 spline that's in there.Richmond. The new yolk is also larger that what i need. Now I'm wondering which one to get? 7260 or 1350 ?    The old yolk is 2 1/8" inside ear to ear.It doesn't measure up to the 7260 specs. With the crush sleeve and possible bearing problem potential...I'm going to have my mechanic in times of need help me out. Don't want to mess it up. What else will I need to get for him to do this?    yolk, seal, bearing?    And what size yolk?  :dunno:   oh well  :banghead:   R/T
