Going to drop off the flywheel to get balanced. I've been looking for a harmonic balancer...   Some say 360,Some say small block. And don't specify.  Is there a difference between a 360 and 340 externally balanced h/b?    I've torn the house apart looking for the old stuff with no luck.

would this work?

It has to say 340 with cast crank in the description. '72 340 cast crank balance is NOT the same as 360 balance. If you find someone with a 340 cast crank balancer, you can take it and your balancer to a machine shop that does balancing. They can make yours match the off balanced one.

I'll get a pic when I get home. My 340 is on a cart sitting in the corner of my garage.  The raised portion in front clearly says "use with 340 cast crank only"

Thanks.  So I might have found one off fabo. Just emailed him. So if I find this h/b for a cast crank 340 and get the flywheel balanced for it.  I should be good?  If I pull the oil pan off is there a way to confirm which crank is in there?  Getting frustrated with the thing. Why does it always have to be so difficult?

Here are pics of my HB.

Just putting the correct balancer and flywheel on will not guarantee that the vibration is gone. The only sure way to have everything that came on that motor was to find an original, untouched engine and trans or own it since new and drove it yourself to know that it was balanced. Getting the right stuff "should" balance it out. If not, you have to have a machine shop do it. You would just have to take them all of the pistons, rods, pins, rod bearings, crank, balancer and flywheel. That is why it is worth the money to have it done while apart.

If you want to verify that you have a cast crank, look at the parting lines between the rod's journals. If it is a skinny line, it is cast. If it is about 3/8" wide, it is a forged crank.  You better check that because some 72 340s were forged.

Robert, I have one, but cannot vouch for it's condition.  Let me know if the FABO guy falls through.  The HB is back in IL and I'm currently in NE, so it'd be a bit before I could ship it, anyway.

LOL  I aks that all the time.   But hey, it could be worse.  We are obsessing over issues with our toys.....and it feels great when we finally find the fix.   See my "fuel sending unit is pissing me off" thread....LOL

heck if it wasnt for this forum and all the help/advice, i would have either taken a bridge or dumped the car in the woods a while ago....LOL...glad I havent done either because, when these cars are good, they are SO good!

THANKS!   I havnt heard from him. But would take you up on that one ! So now I understand a little better.Going to pull the pan and snap a pic or two. Maybe you guys can tell what it is.Might have to pull the Windage tray. It doesn't matter as I have to fix it. So my plan is to get the right h/b and fly job and see what it does. But it's just not worth it to not stroke it.Bigger
cam,port/polish.  That seems like the best way to get it all balanced properly and go faster!   That's fine.

I hear ya shadango !   I'd really be screwed without this place and you people! It was a Cuda day here...which means it was nice out. I just want to be cruising around in her. There's nothing like it. I'm completely addicted to them. There is only one cure and that's cruising. Wrenching or sanding... Ehh sure we all know it's gotta happen. When you spin that key and hit the gas... All this becomes worth it. It all disappears. The pistol grip is my therapy.  :screwy:

The next step is to see his crank before he does anything else, right Hank?
