Where do I look?  Parting lines between the journals....? Hmmm

STEELCRANK,   wide parting lines like in the pics.  Cast crank has a thin line due to the casting molds fitting together tightly.  Look at your pics.

You need the stuff .......HB and drilled flywheel..     Hope that does it for you.  I fought an out of balance problem with my very first engine @ 17 years old.  Shook so bad that it broke the 727 tailshaft off at the rear bearing. Mine was a 440 steel crank but had 6-pack rods in it, but a standard Hb and flywheel. Should have been a different HB and different flywheel.  I wish someone had helped me 34 years ago. For years I thought that I had a cast crank. I ended up having it balanced after taking it all apart.

Don't know if this helps or not but I have been struggling with a driveline vibration for many years. I replaced the driveshaft after checking everything else out (even centering the bellhousing with the crankshaft) and it turns out my slip yoke which I transferred to the new driveshaft had .032 of play. The vibration was the worst at neutral throttle which made sense - with no load on the yoke it was free to vibrate more than when there was either positive or negative throttle.

If the engine is out of balance, you'll feel it in neutral just raising the RPMs.  The drive shaft and yoke don't have to be turning at all.  If the yoke, driveshaft or wheels and tires are causing it, getting it to vibrate on the highway then pushing in the clutch or putting it in neutral and still having the vibration eliminates the engine.

I took the mechanic who helped me with it for a cruise. We didn't make it out of the parking lot and he was on the flywheel. At about 2400 rpm's he was all over it. Very subtle. After we got back he made me sit and raise the rpm's there and let it drop. But he's an old B,R/B drag racer and didn't know about the specific balancer. I'm really wondering what it's going to do.

It has to help a lot. If you look at the pictures of the balancer you can see that the offset weight is really big. Take that away from a balanced engine and things start wearing funny and coming loose.

Ain't that the truth.   So Tom here sent me the h/b! I'm going to pick up the flywheel today. A nice guy too... He had old cars and harleys all over.He knew it was a special deal. And had the mandrel for it.  I was in the right place.  The starter cone was cracked,And there's no way that gold pan is going back on there.A few more things and I'll fire her up!  I'll be out in the garage.  :working:

Wondering -- how did you find the amount of play?   Can the yoke itself be measured for specs off the car??

I have a Mopar friend that works in a 4-wheel drive shop - he brought his dial indicator and moved the yoke up and down and measured the travel. He said maximum tolerance was about .004 and it was .032 - I would guess you could us a caliper that has a real fine measurement but I don't have any idea what the spec is. If you need to know maybe Denny's Driveshaft can help - that's where I bought the replacement yoke.

Did it fix your problem? We looked at the slip yolk very carefully.both on and off the lift.I thought the shaft was too long.but he said it was good.I'm about to call on the flywheel.no word from him. Would have been a great day for a cruise.going to be 60*!By the time I get her back together there will be arctic conditions.

if i was you i wouldnt take too much of other peoples vibration problems and solutions like it is written in stone . if you have a forged  balancer and flywheel just do as you are doing . at times these cars can be very forgiving for our mistakes . the only thing that POSSIBLY could happen is irregular engine wear . it dosent happen right away . if its not knocking or makeing any weared sounds and just vibrateing and the other drive trane parts are the correct ones i believe youll be just fine!  enjoy your automobile
