Here's that other engine and flywheel.   I might scrape up some funds. Yank the 340,tear it down,Get it balanced,New main bearings and toss her back in.  Not even bother with the 360. As There is some little things to do in there with no engine either way. And I could have her back within a week if I set it up. Just a thought.  I can't pay for a whole new engine like I'd wish.Cam,stroker,Ect... It's not that bad at .474   I could run the 360 and give up on her for now,But I'm going kicking and screaming! :hyper: :horse:

ya know... after this,It will all be easy. :poopoke:

I'm new to this thread, sure hope your hair grows back! You must have it all torn out by now.

I learned something about 340's. My '74 Challenger(orig 318) has a 340 installed by previous owner. It's a '73 340 block with parts he got out of a blown '68-340. I don't know which crank is in there-my guess would be the '73-so it is proabably a cast unit, unless the '73 motor came out of a manual trans car?

I still have the stock 318-issue 904 tranny, I had a terrible vibration when I drove it but then I had the engine looked at and ended up getting the valves/heads redone. It has a lot better power now, but I didn't get to drive it but 10 miles before parking it last fall. I am going to have to try to figure which crank I have for sure and check out my HB.....I might be in for the same things as you.

Anyway, thanks for putting all your trials and tribulations out on here. It may have saved me a lot of heartache. I thought all 340's were internally balanced.

I found some play at the slipyolk. Not the u joint. And there is about 1/4" machined surface showing past the seal.  So the shaft length is fine. It's been a bad day. My new Mancini started has left me stranded.Got some new clunking in the rear end. Was going to a cruize. Bummer...
So now what? New engine and transmission? It doesn't seem worth it anymore. What am a going to do now? Why me? Why like this? I'm struggling.  :walkaway:

Like how much play? :dunno: I have a slip yoke here if you need it. Most likely just a bushing in the tail stock needs replacing. Simple and cheap?

I'm just frustrated. Big time. There's a good 1/16" play.I'm wondering if the engine caused it. There's nothing I can do really.  Replace everything. Got no money. Going down quick. Traded my old 4 speed to help an old friend. Can't afford an RS.      But I got to see my twin brother drive the charger for the first time last night. Trying to con him into Babying it down to Golden for the first supercruize!!Still tuning the carb. Need jets. It made me smile.

But this sure has me bummed out.    Try the 360? Send the tko in? 5.7L hemi w/trans.?  Cry like a fairy?

Well... I went for the 360 swap. Got to the flywheel and had some problems. My P/P is smaller than the flywheel. So,I tried using the other P/P and it's too big for the bellhousing. So... Do I have the 360 flywheel and my old flywheel matched?   Then run my stuff?  And the 360.

I'm frustrated. Tempted to say screw it and get the 340 properly balanced,And toss it back in. That will cost more. Not sure exactly.Butt a lot more... I'm not sure I can assemble it. And the only cost effective way is to have the same guy who helped me with it in the first place do it again. ( but he f'd it up) UhGGG.     She needs a bigger cam, port/polish. Some other things.    Maybe INDY ?    they seem to do it all.    Big bucks...

Now the 360 is sitting in there, the 340 is on a stand.  And I don't know what to do.   My gut says match the flywheels and shut up. get her running again.  Would this work?     R/T
