400 block, how much?

pretty much what the topic says. how much should i expect to pay for a 400.

found a 77 cordoba 400 4v auto. should be able to pick up the car for 250-500.  rear ended pretty badly.
has discs, might be the 12"s. don't think it had the 8 3/4.

Your right, the 8 3/4 was done in 1974

I picked up one of these cars couple years back and I paid $400 for it

It wasn't rear ended though

Well, unless that car got hit sitting in a parking lot, you know it was running up until the time it was wrecked. Has it been sitting long? Has the engine been covered? If it will turn over and you can verify it, I think what you are talking isn't a bad deal. Heck, if the car was hit in the rear, maybe you can get it running just to hear the engine. Just my 10 cents worth!  ;D  Heck, you can build a hellofa stroker out of it too, get it cheap then build it into a torque monster!!  :D

452, or 474 is what the plans are.
love a 440, but from everythin i've read its easier, and cheaper to get power from a stroked 400. weighs less, revs better, and you can lie and say it's "just a 383" ;)

was running when parked. hood still on car, so mostly buttoned up.
air cleaner missing, but don't know how long.
more i think about it, more i think i need it. has motor, trans, and all the wiring i need to put it in.
could put motor in, and get it all ready to go before i get body work done. pull motor back out, and get it built later. can't run any worse than the /6 thats in there.

guess i'll call the guy back and see if we can make a deal.

Hey P6P, sounds like a good plan to me! I kick myself when I think of letting my 400 HP go, I had a 78 400 HP that came from a highway patrol car, it was what came in my Challey, here is a pic of it. Could have saved a bunch of money if I would have just hung onto that and stroked it instead of going crazy with this 500 stroker I now have. Anyway, keep us up to date!  :D

I have a few 400 blocks. I plan to build one into 451 in the future.
72 i believe was the best year for the 400s with a thick web (more meat in that area) which holds the most HP.$400 is tops I'd pay for the complete motor if you need it.

bought the whole car today, for $400. pick it up sunday.

figured i could pull the motor, tranny, wiring harness, elect ignition, and whatever else i needed from the car.
plan on cleaning it up, and dropping it in the car the way it is. get it mounted, running, drive shaft right, electronics, auto linkages, etc all done before i do the body work.  hate to do like a buddy of mine. he spent 3k on paint (back in the 80's), then proceeded to trash it working on the motor and interior.

fixes 2 problems. 6 popper, and 3 speed.

don't know what kind of tranny, but it's gotta be better than the 3 speed manual that's in there now.

depends on what you want to do. stock 440 to stock 400, yes 440 is better.

from what i've been reading, you bore the 400, stroke it, and end up with a 451, 474, or 499.
yes, you can also stroke the 440, but it$ not as ea$y.
standard chevy pistons, 440 crank either turned down (451) or offset ground (474-499). end up with a motor that weighs ~65lbs less, has a bigger bore (safer since not bored as much), lighter bob weight, and is cheaper. the motor also revs faster and higher than a 440.

you can also lie, and tell people it's just a 383 ;)

440 good, 451 better. no substitute for cubic inches.

 :D The 400 as a high performance engine from the factory wasn't a real screamer by any stretch of the word. Built as P6P is suggesting can put out some real big numbers on hp and torque.  grinyes  As I said before, if I would have hung onto my 400, I could have come close to the same torque and hp for about half the cost where I already had the engine to start with. It would get a 440 (3.75) or a 4.15 stroker crank. Combinations of pistons, cam and head work to get just about whatever horse power your little heart desires!!

The only reason I went with the 440 wasn't because the 400 woudn't do the job, it was the name on the hood. The 70 Chally's and Cuda's came with hemi's 440's etc., maybe you know what I am getting at. Ask someone at the car show what they are running in their Chally, they say 400  yawn  and they just lost your attention, you say 500 6Pak stroker or hemi or 440 6Pak or 340 6Pak etc.   thumbs  they  have your full attention. It's like we discussed about the 440 vs the hemi on another thread, you can build a 440 to blow the pants off of a hemi but which would you really want under the hood? 

Never heard of anyone coming up and asking "That thing gotta 400?"  :P

So you can get a 400 block to a 499??? isn't there ANYway you can get it to 500??  and then which would make more power with the same cam ect.  the 400 (500) Stroker or the 440 (500) Stroker...i'm tring to decide which engine to build....my 440 or my 400...either way its going to be stroked...just looking at my options...ENLESS i come a cross a 392 then i'll build it...but its not likely to happen.

 eekbig This is pushing 600 horses, there are too many combinations to pick one over the other, you could build just about anything to out perform better than something else if you have enough money. That's probably a good issue here, the 400 you can pick up for a couple hundred dollars, try buying a decent 440 for the same. Anyway, check out the link and see what you think!!  grinyes IMHO, you can get more bang for the buck with the 400.

I know you have to cut down the counterweights on the 440 crank when putting it in a 400, but I dont know about internal block clearancing.  What about the 440 + 4.15" crank combo?  Does that take any special grinding?  Which 500 is easier to build?
