Fixing long scratches?
« on: August 19, 2010 - 07:05:06 PM »
What is the best way to fix long scratches left from a shopping cart?

I have recently acquired a set of scratches from the middle of my drivers door to the front fender some spots are showing primer. :villagers:

I think a good amount will come out with some wet sanding and buffing but what about the primer spots?

I have a BC/CC paint with EV2 as the color.

Can I get some BC and touch it up then spray CC on top then wet sand and buff?

Help I can't even get myself to take it out of the garage. Disgusted.

I guess I'll stop by a body shop and ask a few questions there and get an estimate?

Tom, unfortuanately in my experience, you will need to wet sand it down and re-shoot that area and fade it into the rest of the door. After that you will need to reclear the entire panel.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it myself if you see the rates that shops charge. You shot your engine bay i think so id be fairly confident...  :2thumbs:

yeah, I figured that to make it 100%.  I'll have to get a new stripe section too.  I'll try a touch up and re clear from the body line down first I guess.  That's what I get for driving it all over I guess.  Oh well, poop happens.

Ya,once you break thru the clear you will need to repaint to make it 100% though you can touch up just the scratch area with base and clear and wet sand and buff.It won`t be perfect but will not look too bad from a distance.

I have seen some guys do some amazing things with a wheel and some compound.  Once the paint heats up it can be fill in the scratch.   :dunno:

I don`t think that trick will work with clear.  It`s also why I won`t use clear on my cars.
stuff like that really pi$$es me off... dumping a year salary or two into your car and a lowlife without any decency leaves you hangin with a headache and a huge bill....  :aarg:

That sucks!  Won't the Comprehensive on your insurance cover the repair, though?

Reminds me of my car.  I just spent $23K getting the car looking premo.  Take the family for drive.  Stop for a quick bite at McDonalds.  Park out of the way from the entrance.  Buy our meal.  Sit down with the kids and start to enjoy my meal.  In the middle of my first bite a run down honda pulls up next to my car and young mom gets out of the car and throws her door into my car.  I could see the chip she knocked out of the door from my seat.  I wanted to scream at her that she just put at least $500 of damage to my car but knew from the look of her that she didn't have the money.  That trying to explain it to her and get compensation would make it look like I was some insane person.   Plus if she gave me some flippant remark I knew I'd jump her and start beating the holy hell out of her.   So I let it go but my wife knew I was ticked to the max.   :violin:

Some people have nothing of value and never will.  I just wished things were other than the way they are at times.  It is tough when you don't have many things you would call special and someone disrespects you and that item.  My mother always says what goes around comes around so I just pray their day comes and it is equally as special as ours was.

Interested in doing it or walking me through it?

Was that you the other night?

It's been a few years, so not sure on the fade?

Wiging19 that would be bad too, I didn't get to see who did it, I guess lucky for them?

I thought I saw you Friday night?  maybe saturday I was cruising with the wife and saw/heard a loud cuda with an AAR hood fly by.  I was in the challenger.  I think I was on 121 ish in Danville maybe.  Still learning the roads. :bigshades:

I'd appreciate the help with the scratches, I have a fan for you to use either way, I swapped it out at carlisle in the parking lot.  I bought a Viscous fan clutch set up.  This one is a hd stock set up.
