Do the Addco Swaybar Kits come with Lower Control Arm Brackets?
« on: August 19, 2010 - 09:37:37 PM »
I was looking at the Addco front swaybar kit for a challenger that did NOT come with factory swaybars.  In the kit's pictures it shows a 90 degree bracket that looks like it might be used to bolt to the lower control arms for cars without the mounting point... is this the case?  It doesnt directly mention that part so i was wondering if anyone knew if thats in fact what its for, and if they have used the bracket without issues (since it seems like just a 90 degree bent piece of metal without any bracing) did you just bolt the bracket in or did you make any modifications (welding, bracing).

thanks!!!

I have seen a lot of Addcos kits since they are located a few miles from me.  All I have ever seen from them is the piece of L shapped metal you bolt on the control arm.  I recently saw a post where the lower control arm brackets are being reproduced.  They are also thicker than the originals.  I would use the reproduction brackets.

Did you get the 1 1/8" bar? if so how do you like it? did you have stocker on there before? any real noticeable differences?

I went with that bar and it made an incredible difference.  You'll really notice it on the front.  I bought their rear setup but eventually tore it lose from the frame.  Seemed to be a common issue once I did more research.  So I converted to an original setup and then got a thicker bar for the rear.  You don't want too thick on the back because the sway bars affect over steer and understeer.     Addco may have changed how their rear goes in since there are lots of places selling setups that don't require drilling into the rear frames.  I haven't checked Addco since I got my suspension the way I wanted.

My car drove like a boat before the addition of those two items.  Now it handles better and it improved the braking to some degree in my case.

I went from the stock 7/8" front and no rear to the 1 1/8" front and I believe the rear is 3/4".
It made a very noticeable difference.
I agree with wiging, I tore the rear loose from the frame as well. Looking into changing the rear or fabbing a new style mount.

A number of the less expensive front end sway bar kits I've seen use a .25 thick angle bracket that bolts to the lower shock mount. Nothing fancy, but mostly effective.  Can't say I've ever seen one bent from normal use either, but I don't go around checking sway bar tabs at shows.

thanks for all of the info, i ended up getting the addco bar, and i am setting up to drill the holes for the angle brackets, just curious if anyone had a picture of theirs installed?

Since the lower control arm is kind of a C channel on the bottom, do i drill the hole just through the front, not through both the front and the rear of the arm right? Then likewise only bolt it through the front not both (if both i would think it would try to squeeze the two pieces towards eachother)

Just the front, not both. Here's a pic.

thanks for the pic!

did you just assemble the entire bar with endlinks and brackets then hold them into place to mark the holes with the car resting on the ground?

I am trying to figure out how to ensure i drill the hole in the right spot!  Also I assume you only drilled the front section of the lower control arm and not through both right?  Or did you drill through both and bolt them together?

Also sorry for all the questions but how many shims did you end up using for the center brackets?  thanks again!!

To tell you the truth, it's been about 7-8 years since I put the bars on so my memory may not be perfect, but I think I mounted the bar & end links to the k member first and with the car sitting on the ground, marked where the bracket needed to be so the bar would be horizontal and not angled up or down.
I only drilled through the part of the lca you can see.
2 shims per k member mount. That was just to centre it in the gap of the k member.

Hope this helps. You will notice a HUGE handling difference!
