I found a 70 4 speed- they guy says its in decent shape, but for the 100 bucks he wants I wonder if its even worth getting or should I try to find a certain year/model manual tranny for the 440 and what year 440 makes a good donor motor?

69-78 are the best 440 blocks , 66-72 have the steel crank if you are not stroking it

Even a core is worth that much.

the early block is missing the re-inforcement rib at head bolt depth on the outside of the block & is a slightly weaker design

thanks again. I found quite a few rv 440 motors in my area. One guy is basically giving me one with less than 2000 miles on his rebuild I have to pull it. my question is do I want one of these or what motor should I look for year, casting numbers etc?

I had an column auto so I dont have the clutch pedal setup, so my question here is do try to find a 727 auto or do I want to go with a manual of some sort while I'm making such a big change anyway- in for a penny in for a pound right? I think I can source a 70's era chrysler 4 speed in my area pretty easy if that is the right choice. I once put an aftermarket B&M cheapo shifter in my 67 firebird (which was a column auto) and I never really liked it. but it was my first car and I hacked it up so bad I wished I left it stock.

I just want to make sure I make the right choices now so I dont have to do it twice on this really nice car (I've learned way too many things the hard way)

nothing wrong with the RV 440 as long as it is not an industrial version where the water pump mounts to the heads , even if it is the block can still be used just the heads will not

i found a 400hp built 440 and 727 reverse manual 727 for 2500 on craigslist, or should I go with a 4 speed and deal with the linkage problems with the clutch pedal. I love a manual, but I've never seen a reverse manual auto in action so I dont know if that is the best of both worlds like I've heard. Bear in mind it comes with a 3000 stall converter and will be used only for street use- thanks in advance

I never learned how to drive an auto so I would go std
depending on the gear ratio 3000 may notr lock up on the highway which can make a lot of excessive heat
