Yoke & U Joint sizes?
« on: August 22, 2010 - 06:50:01 AM »
 When I removed my 742 Pig and went to a 489 Pig, the 489 Yoke was about a 1/2'' wider and it looks like the diameter of the caps for it need to be larger. Can anybody tell me the correct size for these? I think the part of the U Joint that fits in the 489 Yoke should be 1.125'' x 3.620''. Is that right?

The U Joint that came out of the 742 (on the Yoke side) had a cap that measures 1.075''. The part of the U Joint that fit in the drive shaft is 1.125''.

  If the 489 requires a 1.125'' cap, will I need a different strap to hold it in the Yoke or will the one from the 742 that held a 1.075'' cap be OK?

 Sorry for all the goofy questions.....THANKS for any help I can get!

You will have to get the correct straps for your yoke, the smaller ones won't work. The Carquest I used to work at had strap kits (straps & bolts) available for the different yokes, and I would think that any good parts store should be able to hook you up with the right kit.

Conversion U-joints are also available so you do not need to change your driveshaft.

 The difference between the two yokes is quite small. measuring from center of bolt holes on the two Yoke is as follows:
The 489 is 1.547''
The 742 is 1.502''
A difference of .045''
I double checked the cap size needed for these two Yokes, the 489 needs a 1.125'' cap and the old 742 used a 1.070'' cap. I went to O'Reillys, they could not come up with a strap for the larger cap. BUT, the cap I got bolts up to either one just fine...........

 The cap size difference is .027'', an I going to stretch and stress the strap by using it on the larger cap?

You need the larger straps.

Try Cass if you can not source them locally;
