727 woes
« on: August 22, 2010 - 09:05:18 PM »
K had some friends over who know way more than me, but not enough to actually diognose the problem.
Here's what we got.
tranny is shifting real early, even under no load(car on jack stands) thats where my clunk is comming from.
If I run it out starting in low, no clunk, seems to shift well manually.
In auto I'm in drive by 20mph, granted I haven't had it anywhere I can really take it through the gears with much throttle but seems it should not shift that early.
We have some play in the kick down linkage, it will only push the trans lever back 3/4 to 7/8 of the way, with throttle full open(you can push the rod back the rest down low by hand.)
Unfortunatly I don't know the history , if it has a shift kit or not, I do know when I bought the car there was no kickdown linkage at all.All I did was put on a deep pan, a new filter & fluid.
it does have a higher converter 25-2800 stall.
I have no one I can ask locally (that I know) so I'm at the mercy of the tranny shop I end up at(I will at least get some referances)
Any Ideas of what would cause that & how big a job it might be, feeling dumb,Rich.
Here's a pick of the ebay linkage rod(one piece) I got.

.......Your added bolt in the slot might complicate this...Is your kickdown rod hitting the firewall?.mine just touches the brake line at full travel.
From the Service Manual (short version)
Kickdown band adjustment  loosen jamb nut, run in adjuster then back out 2 1/2 turns.
Linkage adjustment... With choke disconnected or held open have someone hold the kickdown lever on the tranny all the way forward (or make tool with spring to hold). Loosen kickdown lever adjustment bolt, holding the lever back, adjust the slotted bar forward till is in contact with the carb. stud.

The bolt was to make the distance 4" as posted in another thread, because of the high rise it just slopped around in the slot & did nothing!
Can't say thats exactly what we did, I was the guy under the car holding the lever  ::)
What they told me was even after adjustment there was play in the rod, it would not quite push the lever far enough, stick your hand down low on the rod & you can just push it easily the rest of the way, I guess my question then becomes would that cause those really early shifts?
I'll pull the manual & read it over again.
Does the fact that It had no linkage at all when I got the car hint at something the previous owner might have done? Thanks, Rich.

Yes, but I'll shoot a pic of that today, going out there later to finish off the rear then I'm going to play with that linkage, mabe I can tweek that rod (straighten the 2 big bends a tad) to give it more throw.
gotta check where I have that bolt in the slide bar, thats supposed to make up for the high rise, maybe I can move that foward a tad to get more push.
School me a bit, ?pushing the tranny lever back increases pressure? if so would that 1/8 or 1/4 of an inch make that much of a difference(this baby shifts at 5 to 8 mph under easy take off) since it's barely moving on low throttle anyway?
If I adjust for full throw but end up with it not all the way foward on idle, what would that do, worse or better.
Moneys been tight, don't wanna give it away if I don't have to! Thanks,Rich.

:clueless: Ok, I did NOT transfer that adaptor to the new carb, went out to shoot another pick & holy crap it's right on the carb no adaptor, I guess because the throttle with exrtension reached I thought I didn't need the adaptor, still have it,so another job to get on today, could it be that easy??????????????????? I friggen hope so, but this is the Rusty one  ::) so doubt is my 1st thought

Previous owner had a 780 holly on there, manuel choke, I was told it was way too big , now it's a 600, a guy who's supposed to know sold me the carb.
Going out now to see if the holly adaptor will fit the eddy, I'll post up if it worked! Got my fingers crossed! Thanks for the help,Rich.

ok, something is missing on that carb, the adaptors bolt on with 2 bolts & the arm on that carb only has one, so i canibalized the 74 a tad more.
It had the eddy adpt on it, switched em out, level is not much lower, slightly better angle but it also seems a bit back further. being alone today I can't say 100% but it seems to be all the way foward at idle & all the way back at full throttle(held it open the grabed the rod down low & it did not go back more like it did before.)
Pics first, sob story later!

Now here's a kicker, I put that carb on the 74 & that one hole seems to line up perfectly, one option I may go to as a last resort is to also steal the kickdown from the 74, also a one piece rod, but a little different from the one I have,
Sob story yet to come!

One more question , the newer eddy does not have this white wire, should I transfer that over too, looks like a simple ground?

Now for the sob story, picture joe amature thinking he may have the problem solved, just DYING to take the car out for a test drive & see if the rear is quiet & the shifts are better & he friggen cant get the GD carb tuned enough to move the F-in car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got it started up ok, idle real high, tried to lower it & she stalls out at anything under 12 or 1300 rpm's.
Messed with the mixture to no avail, was gonna just take it out anyway & banged it into drive &... & she friggen stalled right out.
Got out the vaccum guage & it's all over the place, moving between 10 & 15" hooked the vaccum advance back up, no difference,Guage on drivers side vac port, advance on pass side (as it was on the other carb)
put both screws all the way in & brought em both out 2 1/2 turns, even starting there can't get it to run at a lower idle.
So Cooler heads prevailed & I figgered the drive will have to wait till I get that diled in a little better!  Rich.

Oh yea, this carb ran decent on the 74, started with a normal fast idle & would kick down & idle decently, don't remember the exact rpm's but nothing like whats going on now.
I'll starve it for air tomorrow & see if maybe the old gasket is leaking.......... that brings another thought to mind, there is also a 3/8" or so spacer under the carb do I really need that, removing that would also improve the kickdown angle!

OK I'm a dumb ass,  :-[ stopped buy to pay my mechinic (still didn't make up the bill I think I'm in trouble with that!)  :22yikes:But talked to a couple of the guys & there it was, the high idle, gotta really look for that damn screw, lowererd that did a rough setting on the mixture, set the base idle & Off I went.

I'm (we're) heading in the right direction, with adjustment all the way back she's shifting a little later, still early but not as bad, under a little more throttle the clunk on shifts goes away, got some other vibrations & rubbing noises under the floor boards, but not drive train related(well not directly)

Another thing I forgot to mention is we (340 bros & I) had to pull the adjustable pinion snubber, it was resting against the floor, prev.owner had air shocks, so now I need to trade for a stock one(charger man may have one, he just put in a dana 60)

Think I might ditch the carb spacer if it 's not clearence necessary, 3/8 or so more can't hurt , then maybe bend out the rod a bit, last case rape the 74 again & take that one!

Gettin there  (without a tranny rebuild-at least for now) ;) Rich.

Rich, sounds like your on the right trail.... Little white wire is the choke ground, you sill need when you wire it up. Clunk in the shift may be a bad rubber in the tranny mount, is it bad going from forward to reverse?

Keep on thrashing

Tranny mount was the 1st thing I did,my mechanics safty check confirmed that the old one was bad, after I replaced it I found it was not the clunk, my foward to reverse clunk(the normal one if your a mopar guy) is mild.
This is definatly on shifts, since I'm workin local streets with low throttle(didn't help it was wet again today) you can barley see the tack "blip"  on shifts for the lack of a better term, before she was in drive by 20, now it's 30-35, under a little harder acceleration it goes up a bit more & the clunk goes away. At least foward progress was todays theme, just my missing the high idle screw was my only blunder, annoying but minor!  thanks ,Rich.
