BOUGHT A 4 SPEED!
« on: August 28, 2010 - 11:45:43 AM »
went to buy a part from a guy, he kept tryin to sell me a 4speed, wasnt interested at first until he said he had everything, minus a bellhousing, including carpet, to convert an e body to the four speed then we started to talk and i ended giving him 1500 for it all........soooooooooooo YAYY lol.........it came out of a 70 383 cuda, hasnt been cut, been fully rebuilt, it is jus a 23 spline, he said it was the larger bearing retainer, but i havent checked (dont have any calipers)...now i jus need to make sure my crank is drilled for it, not entirely sure how to tell?!?! help please!...and i need to ask which flywheel to use the 11 inch that came with it and has been surfaced, or the 10.5 inch that came with it?    :cooldancing:

the numbers on the side read C95664 Z        and 12-01

on your crank end check to see if you can install a pilot bushing if not it will need drilled to accept the bushing

If your crank isn't drilled for the pilot bushing you can get a bearing or bushing that fits in the torque converter register of the crank. The factory part #'s are 53009180 for the bearing and 4338876 for the bushing. Any parts store can cross reference these numbers to their numbers. Some cranks had a hole drilled in them that is just a little smaller than the stock pilot bushing and if that's the case you can just put the bigger bearing or bushing in and you're good to go. If there is no hole drilled at all you will have to trim a little off the end of your pilot shaft so it doesn't bottom out on the crank.

there are 2 flywheels , 130 tooth & 143 tooth & they will both bolt onto the 6 bolt cranks & require different clutches & belhousing to specifically for each flywheel
yoy can use the Dakota roller pilot brg if the hole is not drilled in the rear of the crank

ok so which is the better flywheel to use i have both? how deep is the crank drilled? i checked and it appeared to be but its not a very deep hole..and are all pilot holes drilled the same diameter when it comes time to order a pilot bushing?

New number to me, I have a B-body close to (& ahead of) it & an E-body not far after it. Thanks for checking.

The hole when drilled in the crank is not that deep and will accept the standard bush, if you use one then make sure that you lube it, I soak them in oil for a while as they are porous or you can just use the Dakota bearing but not both. Also don't recommend cutting input shaft down if too long.

Some cranks have a hole drilled but it isn't big enough for the stock bushing. I have actually turned a stock bushing down on a lathe to fit a crank that was drilled like that. As for cutting the end of the pilot shaft when using the bearing or bushing  that fits in the torque converter register of the crank, you have no choice other than to pull the crank out and have it drilled! There have been a lot of pilot shafts modified like that to address this problem with no ill effects whatsoever. :dunno:

most cranks have a hole deep enough to clear the nose of the input shaft , you can drill the crank deeper to clear the nose of the trans as well , it may not be centered or allow for the pilot bushing but you can use the Dakota brg
I would use Redline Manual trans lube if you go with synthetic or 80-90 gear oil

It will depend on whether or not you have the 11" Bellhousing or the 10.5" bellhousing as to which flywheel you use.

Some say the 11" is heavy and the 10.5 won't hold.(Clutch slipping)..So, it's 6 to one 1/2 Dozen the other...

I agree , the 143 tooth belhousing is harder to get
both clutches use the same 11" clutch disc so the holding power is the same , just use a good clutch , I use McLeod , you can use the street twin clutch with double discs , it will hold the power
