New guy starting resto on 71 challenger
« on: August 29, 2010 - 01:49:37 PM »
Hello, I'm Scott and I am in CT.  Here is my intro.  In 1975 (I was 5) my now exbrother in law had a brand new 74 Rally Challenger, he was my hero and I was hooked.  Just before I was 16 my best friend's cousin gave me a ride in his 70 440-6 cuda vert and I was hooked again.  Just being a working man, I was able to get a 71 Demon 340 for my first car in 1986.  I beat that up through high school and then sold it to a friend. (who still has it and won't sell it back).  Several years past, I got a decent job and I wanted an e body.  I started seriously looking in 1995.  Even though my funding was limited my plan was to try to find a driver and some day build it to what I liked.  After a few good cars got away from me I found a 2 owner, adult owned, garaged 71 318 Challenger (80K), so I got it in 1997.  It was in decent shape, having some body work and a repaint in the mid 80s.  I put it in storage and started collecting some parts for a restoration.  Well I had kids, things went on hold and 13 years later the car has finally gone to the restoration shop.  My plan is to build a 71 340 r/t clone.

My mechanical knkowledge is limited at best, so I am relying on you guys to hopefully help me through this.  My resto guy is good but he is not a Mopar expert.  Most of his restos are 30's, 40's, 50's with a few mustangs and camaros thrown in.  So I have to be his middle man to get answers to the questions we come across.

Here is what we have so far, he has had the car for a few days and has gone through it to give me some news.  It appears that both rear quarters were replaced with the last repaint and they are still workable.  The underside of the car is also solid.  The bad news is the shiny paint disguised two bad fenders and the rally hood I got a Carisle several years ago needs to much work to be saved.

So to start I need to get the best repop fenders and hood that are out there.  I have heard about AMD.  Are there fenders available and is there fit workable? any advice on that would be helpful.  Also if I did go with an AMD hood, can you use original inserts or do you have to buy theirs to fit .

We also need a picture of a 71 RT rear tail with the trunk open so we can see how to tape off for the black paint, and what is the correct black paint to use,  I am going with Y3 citron yella for the finish color.

I will post some pictures when I get the first disc from him and I thank you in advance for any help.

 First off, welcome to the site! Lots of great people here, with lots and lots of knowledge and talent.
I have had quite a bit of luck with AMD products. I don't think their front fenders are available quite yet. My understanding is that Goodmark has the only available fenders right now. There are cars here that have them that look great. You can use your scoop inserts with the aftermarket hoods. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your project when you can post them. Good luck!

welcome.  I agree with alaskan ta   ,it looks great  :2thumbs:   looking at the enginebay it looks like the original color was dark gold?  that sure would look sweet with that light interior    What are your plans for the interior if you go citron yella? wonder how citron would look with tan on the inside...  :clueless:
good luck with your project

Thanks for the words.  I'm going black on the inside, keeping the black roof and adding black strips. Dark gold was the the original color.  Y9 , I think.

Nice car - GY3 is one of my favorite colors - can't wait to see it done.  How long does you guy say it's going to take?

I did the same thing over the past two years and now I have my 340 RT tribute.  It sure is fun chasing parts and there are many guys on this forum who can help with a myriad of things.  Good luck.

My guy is only part time, hes working three days a week now and he bumps up to four days in the winter time.  He has three projects going on at once.  He threw out a rough number of 6 to 8 months but that was before he saw I needed fenders.  So that search could prolong things awhile.  Not to mention if I run out of money.  One thing I definately have is time.

As far as your search for fenders, get ahold of Dave at Roseville parts.  He's amember here and can hook you up with a brand new set.

Does he sell AMD? I hear they are not available yet.

Welcome from another CT guy here!  I've got a base 71 318 car, pretty similar options as yours I'd wager.  Except the GY3 paint! :P

Glad to have you on board!
