Rear disc brake conversion kits for 74 Challenger?
« on: September 01, 2010 - 09:27:12 PM »
Hey Guys,

I want to convert from drum to disc in the back and was wondering what your opinion is as far as the best (in the range of $500-$800) conversion kit to buy? SSBC makes one but it only says it works on 70-72?? Any help/advice is much appreciated!

James

Okay, my mistake, $500 which includes shipping, and it is a SSBC kit.

Yea,

And the SSBC's say they fit 1970-1972 Challengers, so I'm wondering if there would be issues there as well.....

Will rear disc brakes really give you significantly more stopping power? If so Iwould be game to get a set.

Not really , the drums are limited so they do not use max power , the difference comes in with multiple hard stops & the brakes tend to overheat

I really question the need for rear discs, other than the cosmetic appeal.  I have the 11.75 discs in front with 11x2.5 drums in the rear.  I even put the smaller 7/8" wheel cylinders to help limit the rear's.  They still lock up before the fronts.  So the the standard solution is to put in an adjustable valve.  But what does this do?  It effectively limits the pressure to the rear.

So what do you think is going to happen with discs on the rear?  You'll have to crank the adjustable valve down to nothing.
I hear the arguments about unsprung weight, so if it's worth $600-800 to you go ahead, I don't get it.

Now if you are putting 13" or larger discs up front, it might help, but I still wonder.

So even aftermarket disc in the front is still not a huge gain is what your saying

No, don't get me wrong.

I went from 4-wheel drum (11") to 11.75" disc up front.  Huge improvement.

I just question whether there's a need for the rear.

Lot of good info here:

Would that still apply if you used the hotchkis rear sway bar instead of the factory aar style sway bar?

not sure how the Hotchkiss bar fits but if it is above the diff & links down onto the rear leaf springs it will probably hit the bar
