I did the 2-piece in my 72 trunk some time back. My car had been previously "worked on" as well. On mine, it seemed that the trailing edge of the trunk floors sat on top of the rear panel crossmember. I think you can see some of the detail here

thanks for the picture! ;D
the new tail panel sheet metal is not bent its flat this is why im confused. i was planning on cutting out the extension that was welded in and makeing a new one with a lip on it . i also have alot of space on the sides wich appears that the panel needs to be pulled forward on the bottom as i can see the sides of the quarter panel molunts where it is spotwelded from the factory.

On my 71 R/T the trunk floor has a lip that goes under the tail panel and is spot welded.

Here's a good pic before I did any work (I couldn't see any repairwork in this section, either).

My replacement 2 piece floor didn't have this lip, so I recreated it.

dave , the 1st picture i see the top aligned with the panel is it that way all the way around? the reason i ask is i can align the top but the bottom wants to stay in 1/2 in , there isnt any metal in the way to pull it out . so there is a angle ?

thanks al,   ill post them this weekend been busy at work  :walkaway:. wish i had 2 qpanels to match my 70 tail panel . its a shame to weld this nice peace of metal to these bondo hacked qpanels (need money)it would take care of about 70% of the body work and look 1000000 % better .

Here is a pic of the tail panel I put in my car.  The tail panel is not flush with the back of the quarter in any place.  The offset is a little more than a paint stick.
