Bumper question
« on: September 06, 2010 - 06:33:30 PM »
Noticed something the other day that needs answering....the front bumper on my 71 R/T Chally has slots in it which are correct for the jack that I have in the car. But the rear bumper has no slots and does not appear to work with this jack at all. Is the rear bumper correct and the front bumper and jack wrong--or is the rear bumper wrong???

72 was the 1st year for the slotted bumpers so your rear is correct & not the front or jack as I understand it.

Is your 71 a late production car?(built in the June/July time frame)  It's generally assumed that the bumpers changed in 72 but I saw a 71 Challenger on the cover of Mopar Muscle magazine a year or two ago that had the slotted bumpers.  It could have been a late 71 change over.

I believe the bumper jack has date codes stamped into the large rivits.  Check those out to see when the jack was built.

I will check that tonight....

Late in the 71 year they changed to the slotted bumpers (72 type). If the jack is the original I would guess that rear bumper was changed to the 70-71 type. But as was said check the production date of your car.

Look to see what's stamped on the heads of the large rivets on the jack mechanism.  That will tell you when the jack was assembled.  Most likey, March of 71 would be too early for the change over but don't know that for sure.
