Sound insualtion
« on: November 04, 2004 - 03:27:41 PM »
Alright here is my question for you guys.  We all know that adding sound/heat insulation to the interior of your car makes it much more comfortable.  Can anybody offer suggestions on doing it?  I was thinking of using Dynamat, but is there a better quality or better value alternative?  should it be glued on?  I'm going to be replacing the headliner, is it worth putting it on the roof?  Should it put it on the cardboard divider between the trunk and back seat?  What have you guys done in this situation?

We just finish doing this about 2 months ago.  It was really easy, but took some time (about a day).  We used this  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6763&item=7931857838&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW  and used spray adhesive to hold it.  Worked out great and was easy to use.  The floor board and the roof took 2 rolls.  We looked at Dynomat, but it was very pricey.  Here's how ours turned out.

rnsykes,
What Rev did looks great. From my experience, if you have headers, insulate the firewall, and floorboards. On a long trip, your feet will feel mucho heat :o. I found this out on my way to Carlisle :P I guess what climate you live in matters too. If it never gets above 80 degrees where you are at, then insulation is needless. I have insulation between my trunk and back seat, but really, I see no need ??? I think that was wasted money. I can't speak for the roof insulation, but again, that depends on where you live.

I saw what REV did with that Challenger and I knew that it looked awesome and bought 2 roll of that stuff for the convert.  Haven't installed it yet but I know it'll look just as good as what you see with REV's car!     Smart Idea?!?!?!  I think so!    ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Rev, it looks really great.  It looks like the stuff conforms to the bends really well.  What kind of Adheasive did you use?  Would something like 3M's Super 77 work?  Another question is wouldn't that stuff trap moisture in?  I'm not so much interested in keeping the cabin warm thought.  It would be nice to reflect some heat in the summer.  I have black vinyl top, and no AC.  But I am running stock manifolds.  My main goal is to lower the level of noise in the interior.  In Highschool, I used the think it was cool to be loud, but now I have mufflers and just want to be comfortable.  Thats why I asked about the trunk divider.  The other problem is, that my dog is scared to death to ride in the car with me becasue it's so loud.  That just breaks my heart.

This stuff does bend and morph really well and is very easy to cut.  We used 3M adhesive spray or trim spray and it works great.  We might have oversprayed on the roof parts, but we didn't want it to come down in this REALLY hot Atlanta heat (we will also have a black vinyl top).  As far as retaining water, that was one of the selling points on this stuff...

It prevents condensation and it  WILL NOT mildew and WILL NOT retain moisture like cotton or jute backed products.

I guess I'll have to wait and see, but after replacing one floorboard, I can tell you it was on our minds when we bought this stuff.

Thanks for the kind words folks.
