Intake manifold problem?
« on: September 14, 2010 - 02:04:49 PM »
Need help again guys, not sure what I got here, there's a section on what I think is the heat crossover section where the manifold has no metal, old gasket covered the hole, but I'm sure was not a seal with nothing pressing down on it!

Here's a pic of the manifold & the area in question?

I belive thats just the manual choke heat passgeway
Even if you dont use it or have one installed, no prob as its not an open passgeway   I should know   I have the same set up.

If you only drive in warm weather I'd block that off. It will keep the intake/carb cooler.
See how the heat has started to bake the oil a little on it. Not the best for performance.
Also I would never turn a carb upsidedown. Doing so lets any dirt inside get into places that cause trouble.  :2cents:

Rear cork gasket towards the pass side, gonna blob some silicone on there today & see if I missed on the gasket line up, checked it with a mirror & it looked in place.
I might start hunting for a stock manifold, with all the problems the high rise is causing..............
Air cleaner barley clears the hood, the kickdown issue, if it's warped I may solve a bunch of problems with that, not planning to race it so stock seems like the way to go, only thing is there's a pretty radical cam in it, will it be ok with a stock manifold? Rich.

the little red plastic inserts should hold the side gaskets in place , the end seal may not be sealing but the spray could be going through the PCV system into the carb .
the Factory intake from 68 - 75 are a good intake as well

Just keep your cool and KEEP that Intake.  Stock ones weight a ton and those after market types really help out in the performance dept.  :2cents:

Ok, blobbed silicone on the back gasket & that one is sealed, found another under the carb, stud hole stripped, was gonna drill it & tap it next size when I noticed everything had a second hole in it, so I put a stud in there, that should be ok?
now it's just a matter of gettin a little help fine tuning it, she idles ok, got it up to 230 sittin there running & sprayed around everything again, I think I got the vaccumn leaks ok for now, worst case if the silicone fails another gasket set.
Only prob now is I can't nail the peddle she tries to stall, she'll go up easy nice & smooth, pretty rough idle too. thanks for the help, I'm sure I'll need more!  :pullinghair: Rich.

Just as long as all 4 bolts to carbs are okay.  Check for leaks again with either or carb cleaner.  Sounds like your after market intake has been around the block one too many times.

Just make sure that the PCV valve is not sticking or the power brake hose is not sealing if you have power brakes.
Has the manifold been machined or has too much been taken off the heads without the manifold surface being machined to compensate, I have seen where the valley side of the manifold/head was not sealing properly.
Pity about the hood clearance as you can get a 1/2" spacer which will keep the carby even cooler.
