Body higher on one side

Body higher on one side

Finaly got the car on 4 wheels but noticed that passenger side is ~1" higher at the rear

I have :
  • new torsion bars in front
  • new rear springs
  • no rear shocks mounted yet
  • no engine and trans mounted

What can be the problem?  :clueless:

Once you install your rear shocks, engine and trans, then you can adjust your tortion bars for propper height. I don't see any problemsso far

But it´s the rear that is higher on passenger side
Front end are ok and i can adjust it to correct hight later

Rear reacts to the opposite front corner adjustment. Also when you assemble the suspension components it's possible to pre-load if the full weight of the car is not on them when you tighten things, this will work out as the suspension settles with use.

You have to remember basic physics - for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. 

Basically the load that is being put on the front of the car by one of you torsion bars is causing the opposite side of the rear end to sit higher than the other.  Without your shocks and with no engine and tranny, there is nothing to equal out the torque that is being applied to the body.  Once you get everything settled in, then you will need to adjust the torsion bars to make the car sit level

When I install new spring rubbers I leave the bolts loose, put weight of vehicle on them bounce the vehicle a couple times then tighten up shackles. The shockers don't make any difference to the height, they only control the spring oscillations.
In your case I would wait until the motor & trans are in and you have set the front up equally, to put your mind at rest I would make sure that the front is equal on both sides but it won't be exact until motor is in.   :working:   :cheers:

Gladyou askedthe question. Just got done replacing shocks on all four corners.  And noticed the same thing. I will adjust the torsion bars and it should fix it.

Did you put '4 speed' rear leaf springs on the car?  I know I've seen a couple of track-pak cars with the super HD rear leaf springs that the passenger side sat up just a hair higher due to the additional leaf springs on that side.  It could have been that this should have been adjusted out, but I remember hearing this was normal back then.

If yours is slightly higher on the passenger side it could be the reason.  The description says these were used on big block 4 speed cars which in my experience means extra leaf(s) on that side.  The springs on my Roadrunner are even bigger than these, I pulled them off a low mileage 69 Roadrunner in a junkyard in the mid 70's and was told they are Trakpak springs, and the Roadrunner sits higher on the passenger side as well.  Its not too big a difference, but its noticeable if you look closely.  Maybe an inch or two max. 

Hopefully, thats all it is with yours.  I remember looking at a 72-73 Charger in the late 70's for a friend on a car lot and I pointed out the whole car was twisted!  It sat higher on the driver's rear and on the passenger front!  We passed on the car and he ended up with a Challenger RT with its own share of problems.

I only know that the springs on my Roadrunner are significantly thicker / heavier duty than the springs listed @ Summit.  I was told they were trakpak when I put them on the car around 1975-76.  The car they came off of was a 69 Roadrunner that the original teenage owner drove into an embankment at high speed when the car was new so most everything worth having was on the back half.  It was an original 440 4-speed car, the rear was already gone when I pulled the leaf springs.  So yeah, as far as I know the std 440 rear leafs were still not what was included in the Dana Trakpak cars, but I could be wrong.  If so, I have no idea why the RR's springs are so stout in comparison.

As far as yours being heavy duty enough, I'm sure they are.  You would not like the ride the RR's spring would give your E body, WAY too stiff for anything other than a 1/4 mile car.
