Stripe & Tail Panel color
« on: September 18, 2010 - 08:57:30 AM »
All,
I'm looking for advice on stripe & Tail Panel color. I have a 73 Challenger and I'm not sure what color the Tail Panel and stripes should be. I am painting my car Citron Yella. I have been told that the Tail panel should be Matte Black. Is that the same as Semi-Gloss? Should the stripes and Hood Blackout be that color as well or should they be Flat Black. The Decals for the stripes come in both Matte Black and  Flat Black. If it is a preference thing which do you think would look better on a yellow car, Semi- Gloss of Flat.

Matte Black is a semi gloss.  I would use semi gloss.  Are you doing the car as a Rallye or R/T?  What is your stripe theme?  I am not 100% sure, but if you are going to do the car as the Rallye I believe the tail panels were the rough gravel silver.  I don't know that they were ever black in 73.

If your going for OE matte black on the stripes, 73's did not come with the hood blackout & the tail panels were metallic silver but a lot of folks prefer to use a black.
Satin or Matte would be my preference, has less gloss than semi-gloss.
see the tail panel here. http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=61201.msg713097#msg713097

If you don't already have stripes, see Gary. He has a great reputation.

Textured argent is the correct factory finish.

After you decide what you are going to do, post up some pics. I have a 73 also and will be doing similar (eventually).

You can paint the stripes, but it is easier to put the decals on.

The 72 - 74 JH tail panel and tail light panels were painted in a large silver flake argent with flat black in the lens sockets. The JS versions colors were inverted. The black on the tail panel and tail light panels were painted black organosol with the large flake argent in the lens sockets. Chrysler refered to the large flake argent color as "Medium Astrotone".  Here are a few pictures that I saved with the organosol panels. Yeap, even the Mod Squad car.

I know the matte black (whis is the same as flat black, BTW) look is what you want, but bear in mind this is only technically correct on 72's.

Slotts, you are the master of the tailpanel shot. You must be an ass man.  :2thumbs:

Jim, I went over to Naples and looked at and drove the Mod Squad car.  It is a 71 Challenger convertible made to look like a 72. I did not know if you had realized that fact. 73, I have the code for the black at home.  I'll post it later when I can get the book out.

Sorry, not me Steve.

Tod,
I snagged those pictures a couple of years ago when it was on Ebay. I don't think the reserve was met at the time.
I'd like to say I never watched the TV show, but I did.  :bricks1:
It did seem that the renovation work was done well. Good you had a chance to see and drive it.

They had the car on consignment.  They were just flipping cars.  They had some nice cars.  They did not know much about the Mopars.  They chipped the valance paint when they put the tag on the car.  In your pics you can't see the chips; but you can see how they mounted the tag. It was apretty decent restoration. I have seen some early 73's that came with the blacked out tailpanel.

73.  I can't find the paint code right now.  I looked.  It is the came code as the 68-69 Road Runner hood black out.  You might do an internet search and be able to find it. It is the code for the organosol black.
