help me with direction were to go with my 340
« on: September 20, 2010 - 10:31:30 AM »
Sometime in the next im going to be pulling my 340 out of the car for a winter project.  Right now I know the motor isn't stock but I dont know who built or whats in it. What I want to do is build a motor that has decent power but also reliable.  The car will never see the track and raced, Its a car show car that I would like to drive it to the show other then towing it. It will be backed by a 727 auto but hopfully will have an overdrive auto when its time to install it back into the car.

Now I have a list of what was done to the engine but the people that owned it before my grandfather intended it would be a drag car but I was told he also didnt know what he was doing when he built the motor. So Im going to be starting over with hopefully the help from the CC crowd.

Right now the motor has been bored .030 over. The heads have been ported and bigger valves, From what I have heard they flowed really good too. So I will be getting them flow tested and see if they are not too much for what I want from the engine.  I have also been looking into aluminum heads as well though, more exact the Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum heads or if anyone has something that better let me know. For compression ratio I want to run 91 pump gas so im looking at 9.5:1- 11.5:1 depending on if i go with iron or aluminum heads.  For camshaft I have no Idea on were to start looking, since it will be a street/highway cruiser I dont want to powerband too high up there in the rpm's. Same with the manifold since it would need the powerband to match the cam. Right now it has an LD340 intake on it. Also one thing I should mention is that I do not want to stroke the motor.

the heads will be fine , Iron will keep more heat in the combustion chamber , the LD340 intake is one of the best ever , the only upgrade might be the RPM Air Gap intake , the cam needs to be matched to the intake & converter if auto is used , I would be looking into the Lunati Voodoo line for cam choice

Are you talking about the stock iron heads or the aluminum edelbrocks? Also what is the rpm range for the LD340 intake? Once the motor is done I will get a stall converter to match.

I was talking about the Iron heads , they will be adequate for what you are doing . I do not feel the alum Eddys are worth the extra cost , the LD340 is good for about 1800 - 6000

the cam is extremely long duration & with no lift to boot , looks like a stock cheater cam of some sort
I would swap the cam to a 235* @ .050 with about .520 lift for street use , Check into Lunati VooDoo cams

So can the cam that says it has in it be a reason why the car feels like it has no power to it? Also any Idea what the ID numbers mean?

That cam would work or you could go 1 lower dependign what you want the engine to do , what stall do you intend to use & do you know what gaers are in the diff ??

with the cam that is in the engine now it should have power but not until you are into the 3000-3500 range

Not sure what gears are in the rear end but I do know that I was cruising on the free at about 3500rpm at 60 mph.  The power band range you gave on the cam sounds about right which is why it feels sluggish on the bottom end. I definitely want to bring the power band down into 1000 1500 range. Im not sure on the stall yet but I don't want a too high of a stall converter, im thinking somewhere between the 2400-3000 range. But like i said it will be driven on the street/highway.

I would look at the cam you found with a 2200 stall , you probably have 391 gears
