215 or 225 radials
« on: September 21, 2010 - 04:48:48 AM »
I'm looking at getting some bf goodrich radial t/a tires for the front.  What size is closest to F-70's?  215's or 225's?

Chart shows 200/70-14 to be the most equivalent 14", 205/70-15 for 15".
...I'd go with 225 if you can find or wider if your rims are wide enough, 60's look better in the wider tire.

I've never heard of F70's before, what were they on? They would be a 235 70 15 (assuming a 15 inch wheel). I have heard of F60, which are a 235 60, and E70 which is a 225 70, but never a F70.

Check out the link I posted...Tire sizing has evolved over time, when our cars were produced the letter represented a width (wasn't very accurate) & the number, as it does now, represents the sidewall height as a percentage of the width.  F70-14 was the size my '73 Rallye came with

True the letter represented the width and from what I have seen E equates roughly to 225 F to 235 and G to 245. That's why the common replacement for a F60 15 is a 235 60 15 or a 225 70 15 for a E70 15, now with 14" rims the letter may represent a narrower width, I've only had experience with 15"

I found some BFG tires that are 215-70-14 radials.  $90 each.

 :iagree:  Nice pic, Hood.

Just for illustration purposes, I have 215/70-14 up front and 225/70-14 in back to give it a staggard look....also because that's what I had around the garage, works for me.  Sometimes in pics the 215's look a little small.  In the '72 Challenger brochures the front tires look bigger so I always wondered if the front/rears were bigger than 215.  :dunno:

From the back 3/4 view you can see the difference in the width of the tires.

See how the front look a little small in this pic:
