383 idle problem???

I just got done putting my 70 cuda back together and having a problem. The car has a new "built" 383, tci 2400 stall converter, tci 727 trans, moser 8.75 rear with 373 gears. I have the timing set at 14 deg. base and 34 deg at 3k rpm. When you set the idle in park at about 800 rpm the car purrs nice, soon as you put it in gear it stalls out. Now to keep the car running idle is set to 1300 rpm so once its in gear it holds about 800.Checked for vacuum leaks and cant find any. Im stumped :pullinghair: Any ideas???

My car did the same thing after rebuilding the carb....found this informative & probably appies to most carburetors.

"Idle transfer slots
Pay close attention to the idle transfer slots(rectangular)in the front of the primary bores of the base plate. When the carb is correct in cfm's and jetting, the slots will only show a square when the butterflies are in the normal idle postition. If the slot is a rather large exposed area, the carb will need the inital timing bumped up which will increase the idle speed and will allow the idle speed screw to be backed down, thus exposing less of the transfer slot. If the slot is less than a square, back off the inital timing and crank up the idle speed."

The carb is a holley 700 dp with a performer intake.

I Googled holley 750 transfer slott & see many articles saying basically the same thing.

Bullitt, After reading a bunch of articles,the transfer slot controls how much vacuum is aloud ??

Ok  I think I got it. Ill pull the carb off and check the slots. Thanks for your help.

how much vacuum do you have at idle ? could be the power valve is open at idle or you air bleeds are too big for the idle circuit & need to be restricted , you can insert wire into the bleeds if the bleeds are not replacable

It has 9 inches of vacuum at 800 rpm. The motor has a radical cam in it according to the guy who built it.I tried to get in touch with him to get some more info but it seems he is no longer in business. (bought the motor over a year ago). I have tried 2 other carbs on it with no difference.
