Intake... dual plain for streetss overated?
« on: September 23, 2010 - 09:57:58 PM »
So it looks like I will be laying my hot little hands on stroked & bored 400 that basically will only need intake and carb.
The carb is a no brainer, but the intake has me wondering.
Now FYI it is an engine done by Al so I asked him his opinion ( obviously ) and suggested an M1 single plain or  Eddy Victor which after some digging I see a lot of people have used the M1.

So I guess I have been caught up in the whole dual plain for street cars mind set.
But yet I think I needed to learn a bit more and single plain intakes any more are not just for hard core race cars.
Even at one point I believe Chryco suggested a dual plain for a motor if it were for an RV

So what do you guys think?
Am I worried about "throttle response" to a point of sacrificing overall performance?
Just looking for some input, tried a few searches but still was fuzzy on when I NEED a dual plain.
Still going to use Al's advise as who would know what the rest of the engine needs besides the guy who built it and many others, but was curious on what everyone else is running.

Give me your 2 cents!

Dual plane is good for low end to mid=range.  Single plane is better for upper RPM usage. That motor sounds like it needs the single plane since it can rev well. :2cents:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Obviously, I'd go with whatever the guy that built that engine went with....Asking this type of question from 100 different people will only confuse you further.....Dude had running and obviously, it ran well with his set up, so......................

the Street Dom would be my choice but you have to buy them used as they are no longer available new
the dual planes work well for RVs :smilielol:

Neil, how did I know you were going to say that!  LOL!!!

Best thing about that its a singleplane intake and it will fit below a stock hood.  From everything I have read the RPM range on those is like 1500-6500 give or take a few hundered RPM.

Good luck,
Don

OK excellent guys thank you.

This is the first "serious" motor I've had, and I have had 2 plain on all my other engines.

Like was said Al would know best, but I was curious on if my thinking was outdated ( or incorrect to a point ) that a single plain was for "race cars".

Thank you all

Some single planes are for race cars...but the Street Dominator works very well from idle to 6000, or so...I am always amazed at how well it works when I read the various comparison tests no matter which rpm band you examine.

The Edelbrock Torker / Torker II is a great B engine intake.  I ran one for years on a high revving 383 and it worked perfectly with my combo.  If you find one cheap on Ebay, Craigslist, etc. you won't be disappointed.

  Put an intake on it and mash the pedal,   yer just gonna  spin on the bottom end anyways unless you start to work on the back end of your car.      Im in the states now. In South Dakota for the night. Montana customs and DOT , were holding me back a little last night. After I got to work Monday in Iowa, I will be home Monday night. Tuesday I will put a fresh coat of hemi orange on the heads for you.  Remember to re set the valves again to .012 after you run the engine warm up with the fresh heads.   I will give you the cam card.   It ran very good with a 6pk on it :2thumbs:

Is it cold in Cleavland ?    I've had my share of it, and geese and bear..............

Jeff, I'd say a dual plane is not over rated and a single plane intake can be very streetable if the engine and the rear gears are set up to deal with it. At a stroked and poked 400 going to what? 500 cubes, an engine that size can handle a single plane easy.  That is, unless you've built a RV engine.  :grinno:

Yeah at 499 ci I'd say after thinking about it and not being built for an RV there won't be any problems

Looks like a few intakes will do the job... Mopar M1, Holley Domminator, Torker II, Victor.... these were used in a "shootout" in a Mopar mag and they were all pretty comparable.
