Putting steering coupler back together
« on: September 26, 2010 - 12:03:35 PM »
Quick question.   As i am putting my steering coupler back together i am noticing the 2 dog bone shaped pieces that go on the pin on the end of the shaft can go two ways.  I did not note their orentation when i took them off as they were covered with grease.  Do they go curved side out of flat side out.  How much grease should i pack in there?   Thank you in advance for your answers.   This place can get dangerous as i tend not to pay full attention as i know i can get ALL the answers here !!!!!

Im pretty sure the curved goes out. and there is a tiny pin in a tiny hole you have to keep it all in place with. You also have a piece of metel all this fits on as a kit

Got ti , I had the Bone shaped pieces going parallel to the steering shaft rather than perpendicular.  Much tighter fit. NO slop.

:iagree:
The small piece of spring metal is installed such that it pushes out on those shoes.
I put as much grease as possible. I figure, a little too much is ok.

the small hole for the retaining pin in the coupler should line up with the hole in the steering shaft so you steering wheel is not 180* out

FILL the pot of this coupler with grease; thereis NO such thing as too much, here. The shoes go on with the curved side to the shaft, and so there is the least amount of slop in the coupler. Bending the tabs over is usually the hardest part of this job, and a large pair of channel-lock pliers is a great boon. Also, as Chrycostated, be certain that you assemble it to the steering gear correctly, as well.

the clip goes on with the end around the side of the shaft not the bottom , this will orientate the shoes correctly , the curved side goes away from the shaft , flat side towards the shaft to allow swivel if the two are not at exactly the same angle

Oops. My bad on the shoe thing. Been a while since I last did one. Had them flipped in my skull. I've seen that clip installed wrongly a couple of times before; good tip. Can anyone imagine what a book of tips like these would look like? Unabridged dictionaries would be thinner.
