    Well yesterday I put in the new 742 3rd member I built with a 3.91 ring and pinion.
    I was running a 3.23 ratio previously. I also pressed on a new set of green bearings to replace the stock adjustable type onto my new custom built Moser axles. Let me tell you. Moser had those axles to the exact measurement as the stock axles to a T!!! Everything fit GREAT!
    Finished up filling the rear with royal purple gear oil and cleaned up my tools etc and the horrible smell of gear oil. Drove it easy for a little bit to break in the gears.  Then got on it in 2nd gear and just smollered the tires . I felt like i was literally on ice. Hooking up with the BFG radial T/A's was non existent. When cruzing back home i noticed i can do 65 mph at around 3k! Wow, NICE!
    Went home and threw on my BFG Drag Radials and went back out. Now i could some what hook and feel the difference in the gear change. Man! Does the motor come alive now! HUGGGGEEE difference. I can't wait to go to the track and see the difference. I think 11.50s if deffiently possible.
    Props to a few companys that were very very helpful and great to deal with.

    Reider racing- Gears ,Green Bearings, Shim kits
    Moser engineering- Axles, studs

    I called Stange Engineering first on the axles and they wanted me to take about 20 measurements of the axles etc (no joke). I called up moser and they new the exact measurements etc. Both )reider and moser) companys were a breeeze to work with. I'll keep everyone updated with some track times!

    Glad you posted this info. I need to change my gear ratio. I had a 3.23 open also and put in a 4.89 posi. Yea the 440 really screams to 60mph, but I am running about 3600 rpm. It's fun but getting old. I was really thinking of going to a 3.91. 3000 rpm at 65 would be nice. I could actually think about driving on the highway then  :D

    Hi 74chall,  Yes, 3.91SG is a lot of fun for dragging & burnouts, but I think it might be a little tight for the trip to Carlislle next year.  That's what I have in my '72 Chall 360, & man it is fun, but I still want to find a 518OD for it. Then I can have my cake & eat it too!! (famous old, old saying-- Ha!)  Do let us know on the times.  I know my little 360 wont run like the big dogs, but it is still pretty quick.  But then, I'm not running at the strip either.  Just enjoy guys.  (but safely)    Ovmf

    3:91's would be nice, but I travel on the highway a lot so I'll stick to my 3:55's which are also a great combo.

    3.91's would be a bit much to drive on the highway for a long period of time.
    518od i believe take a little fenisse (Sp?) to install and don't think it will hold much power as say  a 727.  Need to go faster though, I'm still not scared of it. I hear HEMI calling my name....I WISH! ack

    Need more power. i want to be thown back in the seat and pegged there. Maybe i need a 4 speed?
    I've been racin motocross since i was 11 and i've always had a thing for speed. wether it was wipping through tight trails going 50mph or hitting 100ft jumps 20 feet in the air,or going into the first turn with 40 riders, i was always about letting it all hang out and going ballz to the wall. When you come to the states i'll take yah for a ride in the chally  NZ! dogpile

    3:91s are definately the way to go, thats what im running with. BUT also with the O.D. tranny,which gives u all the top end u need. Ive been up to 130mph and still had lots left, but ran out of guts  ::) And its strong off the line as well.

    I am running an A-518 overdrive tranny in my Cuda and it has been flawless for the last 3 years.    The overdrive gear is extremely nice on the highway as it allows me to cruise comfortably at 70 - 80 mph @ 2,500 rpms.     I recommend using either an OD 4-speed or automatic tranny to get the best of both worlds (performance and highway drivability).      I had a transgo shift kit installed in my A-518 tranny and it greatly improved the feel of the car.    The shifting felt firmer and more like a sports car with the shift kit.

    Super charger no good with 10.7.1 compression.
    Over drive sounds nice but i doubt it will hold 550hp +

    3.91`s are great for launching but $suck on the highway.If I drive the `cuda to carlisle next year it will get a gear swap to 3.23`s or maybe even a 2.76.  ack

    You won't have 550hp when you are using O/D

    BTW, the new 48RE holds 600 ft/lbs of torque

    How can you tell what rear gear you have by looking at the rear tires?  ???
