Can't get into reverse
« on: September 29, 2010 - 12:50:40 AM »
833 4-speed with Hurst shifter/linkage.

I can put the transmission into reverse if I remove the shift rod and grab the little tab with a crescent wrench. But with the rod connected, no-dice. The shifter will not 'pull over' far enough and therefore can not push forward into REVERSE.
Now i heard there is a set of holes that should align together to fit a dril bit into when everything is in neutral but I don't see this alignment hole anywhere?? The problem seems to be in the linkage somewhere but I can't say for sure.

the holes through the levers at the bottom of the shifter housing , generally you can line up the levers by eye as well
the reverse lever could be too long or the slot in the lever may be at the wrong angle for your shifter .
 Welcome BTW

Could the lever be upside down?

Hey thanks for the greeting Chryco, and yes the levers do appear to be lined up visually. And no i don't think the lever is upside down cause it was working in the past and if it were upside down then the rod would interfere with the cross member, I think.
The shifter just will not pull towards the driver side. :banghead:

if it will not go over to the drivers side the levers are not lined up properly or centered in the shifter housing so you need to adjust the length of rods to get them lined up
