Mufflers? Exhaust?

I've got a 72 Challenger with a 440 engine and i'm looking for a new exhaust.
Probably going for 2.5" pipes.
Just need abit of help deciding what I want and I understand its all mostly opinion based so I'm asking for opinions. Since I can't exactly understand how it will sound after the new exhaust is on, what sounds good to you guys?

I noticed alot of people talking about the Flowmaster 40 series.

Talking with the guy at the local muffler shop he recommended Flowmaster as the best performing mufflers.

I was looking into Dynomax Turbos and Superturbos and also UltraFlo SS.
Would the Ultraflo SS be too free flowing and not give me the back pressure I would need?

Any other suggestions would be great also.

And what about X pipes...H Pipes...I keep hearing about them but know nothing about them.

My vote is for Magnaflows and I believe magnaflow has a big block mopar sound clip somewhere on their website. I have run flowmasters in the past and got tired of the sound and all the droning inside the car, plus everyone seems to have flowmasters. The magnaflows give a nice crisp sound and I have run them on my 71 440 6 pack cuda and my 72 340 challenger and both sound awesome (both with 2.5" pipes as well).

This is like asking if you like Blond, brunettes, or red heads.   

The H or X configuration of the pipes will help in performance. As for what mufflers, it really does boil down to how much you want to hear. If you don't do long distance driving on the hiway, then maybe you can enjoy having something louder. For myself, that(hiway) is pretty much what I do, so I don't want a migraine after 20 minutes.  Mine is a milder roar, but I love it. I'm sorry I can't tell you what I have as it was installed before I bought the car, but it is an H-pipe configuration, and I can tell from the sound of the mufflers I don't have the Flowmaster sound.

to me the Flowbastards are the worst , horrible drone & not a nice sound
I like the DynoMax super Turbos or the Hooker Aeros
TTi has an great system , all mandrel bent & fit very well
 Back pressure is a myth , you need good scavenging so the system needs to be small enough to keep up the speed of the exhaust as it leaves the engine so it help to pull out the next exhaust pulse

That's the system I've got under my challenger.
Twin 3" Xpipe behind a 420hp 440.
Couldn't be happier with it.
It's not overly loud yet deliverers a real quality note.
The car is very classy with a hint of muscle about it so the system is spot on to suit the image the car is built to.

My 69 Barracuda (see sig pic) runs twin 4" flowmasters behind a 400hp 440.
It's loud and proud but suits the tough street image of that car.

I do highway driving with it, would also like to be able to take it out at night time without waking everyone up.

I have the stainless magnaflow system (2 1/2" ) I love it ! All mandrel bent . It's got a nice quiet rumble when your idling or just drivng easy. Then when you get on it there is no mistaking you got a v-8 in it!  It roars pretty good! I love the sound, doesn't have that annoying drone!
On my big block Buick I have Borla mufflers. They are ..OK , I much prefer the stainless magnaflows though!

i agree with MEK.

blond red or brunett, everyone will have a favorite. Just need to find a car and a sound.  I have put flowmaster kits on 5 cars, I put on a magnaflow 2.5 ss kit on a friends challenger with a warmed over 383. I think it sounds good above idle or driving. but when idling it sounds odd to me

My vote would be for Magnaflows/turbos with an X pipe.  Flowmasters sound too pick up truckish, IMO.

Another for the Flowmaster side.  I have the Super 40s on my 440 6-pack, and love the sound.

i have v-force on mine and i love them...the only thing is, they have a different sound every day depending on the weather outside...sounds wierd...but its true. nice hum on the highway but screams when in town, idle is nice but pretty loud.

I have a convertible, like to cruise the highways and found that a couple of hours of flow masters gives me a head ache.  End up putting the top up or turning the radio on load to offset the droning of the exhaust sound.  Does sound very cool on the highway but at some point it became a PITA.

Should I worry about the designs like a straight through muffler like the Dynomax Ultraflo SS versus the 3 chamber of the Dynomax SuperTurbos?
The straight through design will give me more flow, but the 3 chamber design would give me more pressure in the exhaust system right?
