Mufflers? Exhaust?

get a set of Cherry Bomb Mufflers, I had a set years ago and they rust out within a year

What do ya mean rust out???

Actually I have set of those on my 451 and it has been to 7000 a few times. Haven't blown yet but they are getting black around the seams. They sound awesome though.

I know when I used the Cherry bomb mufflers the metal inside holding the fiberglass rusted out and little chunkes of fiberglass came out my tailpipe...    Still sounded cool, but dependeing on the internal baffling of the Cherry Bomb style straight through muffler, some are actually more restrictive than they appear.

If the internal babaffling is actually drilled holes that still allow the baffle surface to be flat, then this is least restrictive.  If you look inside and see that the baffleing is punched holes, then this is the restrictive type straight through muffler from what I understand.

Ive had the following:

Flowmasters on a 502/502:  Didnt like what I called the "Tin can sound":  Hard to describe, but the sound was something like it.  Some others may claim the same.  Ive got flows on my 440 now, same thing

Borla on a Ls1:  Same thing as above

Dynomax on a plain jane 350:  Same thing

Im trying to get the old school rumble without the canned type sound.   Im still looking:  I beleive glass packs, regardless of blowing out or how they may/may not be restrictive, may be the way to go, for me at least

It seems all the chambered type exhaust Ive used just has a "tinny" sound I cant get around

I have some 3" mufflers by Different Trends on my 440 that have a straight through design.  Everyone, and I mean everyone, loves the way they sound.  I get a lot of compliments saying that it has that "old school classic sound."  I need to get a sound clip and post it one of these days.

The trouble with glasspacks/cherry bombs, is once they are "Blown out" you have entirely different sound at WOT..This (For me at least) is where mufflers should sound good...These sound like you have an old inner tube tied to the pipes and is flapping in the wind at WOT...Almost as bad as straight pipe...

aero chembers are great mufflers . quiet rumble without the droan mash the throttle and they wake up and sound great. you all know at cruseing rpm that the flow masters make alot of noise and the sound . the hookers are just right and the price is right too . a frend of mine has a 1967 barracuda with 451 12.5 comp full 3in exhaust absulutely no droan and sounds very nice!!

How important is it to retain the resonators?

What resonators? Some people add something to act as a resonator, but most just run mufflers and pipes.

Only if you are really interested in originality. I think most have tossed the resonators (if they were still there) and put the mufflers where the resonators used to go, and just piping where the mufflers used to be.

If you ran just straight pipes you would need resonators but fitting the "H" or "X" pipe as most now do helps to take a lot of the resonance out.

I did the same and eliminated the resonators and just ran an H-pipe and stock mufflers on my big block car. The "H" eliminated the rapping sound at high rpms.

On my 2 small block cars, I put mufflers where the resonators were, then piped all the way to the tips like stated above.

Very good info.  Thank you.   I believe that with the right mufflers the car would sound just right without  the resonators.  We'll have to see.
