Numbers Matching
« on: September 30, 2010 - 10:55:09 AM »
Not sure why I'm thinking of this now I heard this story about 5 years ago . That said I was talking to a man who had a Rumble Bee truck and he was pissed off . Someone hit his door and it had to be replaced . He told me all the body parts are numbered to that truck and it would no longer be numbers matching . Was that correct ? If so is the same true for the new Challengers ? :villagers:

The last few digits of the VIN are stamped in various locations. I don't think I've ever known them all, but on my car they're stamped on the core support, firewall and tail panel. I've never heard of a door being stamped, but that doesn't mean that it's not impossible.

A truly numbers matching car would have all those numbers matching the VIN tag, fender tag and engine engine trans numbers.

It is true, on newer cars (at least Mopars) there are VIN stickers all over the place. I have seen them on doors, decklids, inside of body panels, just about everywhere, and these stickers have the complete VIN on them not just a partial.

Not sure how true this is, but I heard a rumor recently that the engine blocks no longer have a number on them.

I have been to junkyards and noticed that the newer vehicles had the vin stampings on all the panels and stuff. I asked about it in the office and I was told this is for theft recovery identification, when vehicles get stollen and stripped.

Agreed, most (all?) new cars have this for anti-theft reasons.  The more parts that have numbers it makes it harder for chop shops to sell to reputable repair shops if these tags have been removed or altered.  So I'm with the Rumble Bee owner, pissed off about the loss of value.  In fact, the State of Georgia requires insurers to compensate for exactly this kind of loss (and the fact that a background check will now show the vehicle as having been wrecked) when cars they insure are damaged.  It makes sense if you think about it.

Makes sense. But are they stickers instead of stampings? I'd think a stick would be gone after a bottle of rubbing alcohol and a shop towel were applied.

The decals do read void when disturbed also they have a coating so solvents wont remove the vin .as for numbers matching a car or truck with changed parts are no longer original no grey area here ... after all a match need not have a number but just be .
