    Small block paxton supercharger

    Has anyone done one of these setups?  If so on a stock 340 what did it make.  And were there any issues?

    Grand Spaulding Dodge did a bunch of these back in the '70s. The Paxton works well on the 340, and the current kits are well-scienced out and easier to install than they used to be. Power production should be a little better than it used to be, so figure on about a 20-40% increase in power. There are many variables to consider, but this is a decent ballpark. Grand Spaulding used the Paxton on the low-compression 340, so its use on a high-comp engine will also be different from their results (think lower boost pressure).

    Not a Paxton but a Procharger system:  I contacted the Supercharger store a while back ago to enquire about one of their system.  I have a '72 340 with the stock 8.5:1 compression ratio, engine never been taken apart.  The low compression engines serve the purpose of supercharging well, didn't say anything about making the bottom end stronger or anything.  Bob at that store said it would have about 400hp with not much impact on longevity.  Would need to change from power to manual steering and get a different steering box according to what he mentioned.  Also a blow through carb along with other things.

    I hope you were told incorrectly about the required switch to manual steering, that's one change I wouldn't be crazy about in a car as heavy as ours.  I also want to keep a/c if that's an issue.  I've been toying with the idea of a Procharger myself if I decide to go away from the total 'stock' look.  I'd love the sound a supercharger makes, and with the airgrabber setup on the Roadrunner I can't add one to it.

    Hi Jim,

    I got the info a while ago, and if memory serves me well (which it usually doesn't  :faint: ) I think he may have mentioned a GM steering box.   :o

    I think best to email him for more accurate/up to date details.  :grinyes:

    Mopar Performance magazine did an install on a 318 Dart and I don't recall them mentioning all of that with the A body but maybe E Bodys are different.  I'll see if I can scrounge the article up plus as you say contact the vendor/store for more details.  I definitely am not swapping in a GM steering box, so if thats required I'm looking for other solutions....

    The engine bay of an E-body is pretty generous. If you need that much room for the supercharger, there is something wrong with the installation. There is a LOT of room between the smallblock and the steering gear. Check '71-and later B-body setup for possible solutions. They use the same engine bay as the E-body. Also consider th weight issue, if they are suggesting the removal of the power steering gear for room, there is also going to be a significant change in weight over that same corner.

    hi
    I be running some years now with procharger setup from Bob
     with manual steering  ( just give little extra arm training  ) 
    and  will never go back to power  steering ..now have  more control over the car ..
     there are space for a power steering !
    and Bob have all what  you need to do   

    BUT
    but if you want to go high  pressure , you need to think about other piston like forged and MLS head gasket

     broke the  first  years 2 pcs   hypereutetic piston , 2 time blow the head gasket ( fel-pro )  not stonge to take the power
     
    build a new  engiens last winter: 422 la ,spec head and roller cam
     f1a procharger    +20 psi
    DIAMOND forged piston
    MLS gasket with ARP heads stud
    forged  Crankshafts
    bottem end : Small Block Main Bearing Stud +Girdle kit
     and now it´s working !!
