trouble with seat belt retractor?
« on: October 06, 2010 - 07:22:08 AM »
When I got my car it came with 74 seat belts in it. (shoulder belts) I'm having trouble with the retractor. Most times I have to fiddle with it to get it to retract so I can put the belt on. I have to push the belt back into the retractor and very slowly pull to get it to come out? It's the retractor on the floor that's giving me the trouble.
Is there a adjustment or something?

The reel is worn. Usually you find pieces of the nylon that served as a bushing, jamming the belt retractor. Repair might be easy, but you will have to remove it from the car and open it up.

My 73's were dodgy so I cleaned then lubed with silicon spray, that cured one the other I messed with a piece of spring metal that holds tension on the ratchet & it started working.

It might need to be rebuilt, depending on how troublesome it becomes.  There are several companies down here in Texas that do that, such as Sharon's Web and Snake Oyl.
