Red light camera tickets
« on: October 07, 2010 - 04:05:22 AM »
Well, the day has finally arrived. I opened the mailbox today to find the dreaded red light camera ticket.

Allegedly <lol> they have me not stopping at a right turn on red. They have me rolling through at 16 mph.

Now in CA. this is $5-600 so I was pretty freaked out!

This is where it gets interesting. My face was 70% obscured by the sun visor and the photo was washed out so you can't tell who or what is driving the car. There is no due date, nor are there any court addresses or phone numbers. In fact it says not to contact the court, but to fill out the paperwork with who is driving the car with a copy of their drivers license.

Here is an identical ticket, save for my personal info and the city of Poway. <CA>

These are called "Snitch Tickets" Basically they are trying to trick you into "snitching" on yourself, or the driver of your car. They then send this to the courts and you get a ticker, $5-600 fine and a point on your license.

The information I have been reading has said to ignore the ticket, which I am going to do. We'll see what happens. If this doesn't work anyone in the correctional facilities business know how to get a cushy job in the woodshop? I will keep everyone updated.

Here is some more info on snitch tickets. http://www.highwayrobbery.net/redlightcamsticket.htm#Fakes

What a scam...
They put them up here in Cleveland too, and 1 is right by my house.
So, I avoid it when at all possible. You can't always, as in the case where they put some up near a big hospital here, so while you are trying to hurry in the case of a medical reason one way or the other they don't care.

Starting to go up here in FL too.  This is nothing but a money maker for the cities.

Cities actually pay nothing to get the infrastructure installed.  Private companies install all the cameras and provide the SW with the agreement they get a portion of the money generated.

They even found 1 case where the company had not allowed enough time between the change from yellow to red before taking the picture to "catch" more people.  Whenever money is involved corruption can't be far behind.

:aussie:  Over here the red light cameras are common and the fine notice is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle, there is provision for the owner to put somebody elses name in which case it will then be forwarded onto them. Our state government makes about $450 million a year, it is the same for all camera fines the owner is guilty unless somebody else can be nominated.   :villagers:

The State was going to install the cameras here in Oklahoma, but, after resaerching cost of install vs income made on ticket fines, the cameras were not installed.

Also, the great state of Arizona removed their cameras.

They are starting to turn them off in England and there is a call for our cameras in Australia to be turned off too but the governments are making too much money out of them so it won't happen. Pray that they don't check out Australia's camera revenue or there will be a rush to install.
We also have point to point cameras which are mainly used for trucks, that is if you pass between the two cameras which are miles apart too quickly you get a ticket and there is now talk about expanding these to include cars.

Those cameras are the biggest scam I ever seen. I was rear ended because of one near my work. Every one is so affaid to get a ticket, the first sign of a yellow and they slam on the brakes. I was able to check up, but the lady behind me wasn't.  :swear:

And they never seem to put them where they are really needed either. They put them where they can get the most tickets. It is all about the money.  :villagers:

Here is a letter I wrote to the local paper about our cameras;

In the late 50’s there was a song called “Transfusion”. The lyrics depict a hotrodder continually involved in accidents and requiring blood donations. (“I’m never never never never gonna speed again. Pour the crimson in me, Jimson”). For some reason I recall that song when thinking of the removal of the red light cameras at Del Avion and Del Obispo (local intersection).
I was never a fan of the cameras in the first place, figuring they were just a money grab by the city. At that time, the city denied revenue was a factor. I’m pretty sure I recall hearing the old “if it saves one life, it’s worth it” line justifying installation of the cameras at select intersections around the city. Using that logic, I couldn’t figure out why cameras weren’t installed at every red light intersection in town. But, I’m not as smart as a government worker, so let it pass.

When the cameras were removed, I was forced to one of several conclusions. Maybe inflation had reduced the value of that single saved human life to the point it was no longer worth going to the trouble to save. Or, maybe those of us using that intersection had repented of our evil ways and stopped burning rubber through the intersection to beat the red. Since cameras remain at other intersections in town, maybe drivers using those intersections are more low-life scofflaws, while us sophisticates at my end of town had learned our lesson, become better drivers, or simply got tired of dodging school kids in the crosswalks going to the local school.

A call to the city revealed I was right! Human lives have declined substantially in value since the cameras were initially installed! According to the city, “violations had fallen way off and the cameras were no longer needed”, and they “weren’t generating enough citations to offset the cost of equipment and maintenance”. Gasp!

“Hey daddyo, make that Type O”.

Since they sent you a picture of your infraction and there will be a fine levied against you for that infraction, I have a simple solution.  Assume the fine levied is $500.00. I suggest you collect $500.00 cash and spread it out on a table. Take a picture of the cash and send it back to them.   :picture:  Turnabout is fair play.....    :stirpot:    :rebel:    :aarg:

Sounds like it would be better to drive with someone plate that you don't like on the back of your car!  Probably cheaper to pay the improper plate ticket than the camera ones . . . .

Perhaps time to invest in some license plate photo blocking spray. I haven't used it so I can't vouch how well it actually works.

We have close to 20 stop light cameras placed all over in Fremont. She's been caught twice by them and I never have yet. (knock on wood) So she went to traffic school on the first one. The classroom was jam packed.

The photo-blocking spray and all the other so-called camera-blockers don't work.  The Mythbusters tested a bunch of those products and the camera beat all of them.  http://mythbustersresults.com/episode73

Ian, be careful about not responding.  One of our drivers at work got a video-enforcement ticket in a bus in the city of Pasadena that we were able to beat.      I just looked at the back of the ticket and there's a clause in there referring to Penal Code Section 1214.1 that provides for an additional Assessment fee of $300 if you don't respond.  Further, it will go on your record, affecting your insurance costs and the DMV won't let you renew your registration or license until you pay up.  Ignoring it only makes it more expensive.  My recommendation is to pay the ticket and request traffic school to get it off your record so your insurance doesn't go up.   :2cents:

Well,as for North Carolina
they have stopped these for a bunch of different reasons I 'm sure they will start again(too much money in equipment).
First reason .---the company being paid for the tickets was not keeping the legal statute to pay for the schools.
It appears that the equipment costs warrant the majority of the fine(the court did not agree).
Second reason---In America you have the right to face your accuser in court.
Thirdly---It is a camera, with technology today you can make a camera show anything!!!

If you guys read my links, this is a fake ticket. They have no proof it is me since they can't see my face, so they are hoping to trick me into turning myself in.   I don't think so.   :)

I like the idea of sending a pic of $500 cash!

I don't know about out there but here in Ohio they don't need a picture of who is driving.  They ticket the owner of the car with a provision for someone else to take responsibility if they were driving your car.  If someone else was driving and they won't admit it then the person the car is registered to is responsible.  Good luck ignoring the ticket but I wouldn't.  This method has held up in courts around the country.
