Dana 60 swap; B-body for E-body
« on: October 07, 2010 - 12:52:00 PM »
Don't know if this is possible but I have a Dana 60 Trac Lok with 4.88 for a B-body (70-71) and I may be interested in swaping it for the same model Dana for an E-Body (71 Challenger).

You will have to move the spring perches out about 3/4" on each side of the B body rearend to put it in the E body, or move the E body springs in that amount. There are offset front spring hangers and rear shackles that will move the springs in enough to bolt the B body housing in the E body. I believe Dr. Diff has a kit for that.

I am fairly sure that the 71 b body is wider than the 70 b body

You're correct on that Alan, the question now is does he have a 70 or 71 rearend?

That's what I was hoping to avoid by just swapping/trading my B-body Dana for an E-body Dana; of course, someone would need to be willing to have that trade.

I was told that it is for a 71 B-body; a stock Sure Grip is on the car now.  This Dana was included with the car when I bought it so I am looking to sell it or swap it for the correct rear for my 71 Challenger.

Im willing to bet that 71 b body rear would sell quick at the dodge charger web sight.  They are very rare and sought after, so should bring a good price, or enough to buy a new one from doc differential

Yes; I have been told the same thing concerning the value of the rear, any thought's on what would be a fair asking price?  I am in the early stages of working out a deal with a local performance shop (the guy has a Cornet) to trade the rear and trans for converting the car to a 4-speed and I want to make sure I am not under-valuing the rear, etc.  The conponents for a 4-speed setup are pretty pricey but it is what I really want to do.

my 71 has a 69 b-body dana 3.54 power lok rear in it. The perches were rewelded.
4.88s are some serious gears. Is it going to be a driver?

Why not use it?  True, just change out the gears for more driveability, but a 1970 b-body will work just fine; just get a Dr. Diff relocation kit; no welding req'd.

And, you'll have more room for big tires underneath.

I was told that the length was too long; the previous owner used shackles to keep the body from sitting on the wheels.  Is there a difference between B-body Dana's from 70 -72?  The code off the axle tube is 603222-2 which from what I found indicates that it was for 70-72 B-body cars (Trac-Lok) and the trailing "2" denotes a 3.54 gear-set.
