1970 Challenger Light Package Question
« on: October 08, 2010 - 10:08:25 PM »
Does anyone have a picture of the steering column that has the key illumination?  I know what the light itself looks like, but how does it illuminate the key?  Is there a hole in the column?

I'm still in the "dark", is that small thing that looks like a lever by the hazard button a light?

No, its a piece of clear plastic that is painted silver.  The light is inside the column and it projected through the plastic, like fiber optics works.

Catfish .... the answer should have been YES.   The silver things is the light.   The explanation was however correct.   It carries the light to the end and iluminates the key tumbler.  Inside the steering column there is a bulb inside that round tube.   Hopefully that helps?

Thx, I understand now.

Next question, how well do these work?  Are they specific to E-bodies, or could you pick 1 up from any Mopar?

It has been a LOT of years since mine was running, but I remember it working quite well.

Good question ..... it is my understanding that they are unique to ebody, but perhaps someone else could chime in and clear that up?

definately works quite well and I just learned that if you have the light package on you car when you touch the key hole on your door that the little ring around the key hole lights up too! but I think mine is broken or worn out from age! too bad I think that would be neat!!

I don't know how that would work, I have no wires running to my doors, and I thought it was tied to the dome light coming on to trigger the timer for the key light.

well I have a white plastic ring around my door lock and a guy from my club said that is what it was for! and I have the light package on my car!!  unfortunately it doesn't work anymore it must have worn out over time! I'll check with my connection at Dodge he has worked there for over 30 years and he is kind of a GURU!!!
