Replacement sheetmetal
« on: October 10, 2010 - 08:47:28 AM »
I am replacing a floor pan in a 72 'Cuda Are all replacements created equal? I've just returned from Cruzin the Coast and Goodmark had a display. They by far have the best prices. Has anyone had experience with thier sheetmetal? Are they all the same gauge thickness? (AMD / Year One / etc.) I am new to this site I hope this is an appropriate question and topic. Thanks!

Welcome to the site.  Good questions and you will get some good answers here.  Not all metal is created equal, but AMD and Goodmark are the top two suppliers of e body metal.Try checking out some of our sponsors, you could be suprized at the prices and the service can't be beat.  For instance, Roseville Dave gives 10 % + off of their lines depending on how much you are buying. And no upcharge or handling fees like YO.  Good luck with the project and give us some pictures.  :2thumbs:

I don't know if there is as much a difference with the supplier as there is the part.  I bought quarter panel replacement skins for my Challenger from Year One.  The fit to the rear valance was way off so I bought Goodmark factory quarter panels and the fit was spot on.  The trunk floor from Year One was a good fit with the rest of the parts such as the trunk extentions and the outer wheel wells but a trunk to rear window filler panel I bought from AMD did not fit up to the quarter panels very well.

I guess if you buy as much of the corresponding panels as you can from the same supplier you may have a better chance of matching up the seams.

Despite my experience with the AMD panel not fitting to the quarter panel I think they have a good product in most applications.

For your trunk application I assume you will will be using a two piece part so there is room for expansion and contraction for the fit no matter what company you buy from.  There is no perfect fit so you will have to rely somewhat on your skills to massage the part in place.  Just take a lot of measurements before and especially before you finally weld it into place.

Thank you for the responce. I appreciate knowledgable people that love thier mopars as much as I do. I like the people at AMD and Goodmark, I don't want to settle for a lesser gauge sheetmetal base on price. Thanks again,
Ray

if you can afford to spend extra $$ for AMD, you will be more pleased, because all their metal is almost twice thicker than Goodmark, if you're ever at a show/swap meet pick up same part from both companies and you will see the difference, usually you'd be able to tell which one is which blindfolded

You can check out my website and download my catalog.  Great reference to see products available for sheetmetal repair.

I have had great success with the Sherman parts as well as AMD.  Just stay away from the older galvanized parts.  The newer tooled parts fit and function much better than the older reproduction parts available several years back.

that galvanized tip is probably a good seat of your pants way to decide.  i bought the 2 piece trunk floor pan and extensions you see all over the net and while i had no issues with the metal thickness they sure required alot of work to make em fit.  my car would have had to have been like 2 inches wider for them suckers to be right.

the galvanized front floor pans fit nicely however by the time i scuffed em up and put 2 coats of chassis saver on em i probably shoulda spent a few more bucks for the ecoated stuff. i just didnt want to hack away on my transmission tunnel if i didnt have to.

my goodmark quarter skins and valence and rear window piece all fit well.

Honestly if you can go with ORIGINAL sheet metal, or NOS.. Yea AMD and Goodmark is all well and good, but their metal in "shipped" from over seas..The metal from Tiwan/China/Japan is NOT the quality as original U.S. sheet metal..Everyone has KNOWN FOR YEARS that overseas metal is garbage, yet people are chomping at the bit to pay for these pieces..The AMD quarters for instance, if you lean on them will dent in after being installed, as compared to an original..It wont dent in..There are HORROR stories from people that the metal that is being feproduced will not fit correctly..The AMD fenders dont lign up correctly, and still you need to put in like 100+ hours to repair..
What do you think would happen if one day you go to "get on it", and that lesser sound sheet metal JUST happens to give/buckle in?? I would want a LITTLE more ass behind me, to SAVE MINE!!!
I personally would NOT want this in my floor pan, or in ANY of my car.. What happens if I go over a bump and RIP there I go through the floor board!! If you can swing the extra dough I would pay the more, than to pay the lesser to "cut corners"..You get what you pay for..
Dont sell yourself short, if you love your ride like I do mine, it would be a NO BRAINER...Take your time and look for original..After all Rome was not built in a day..

I wish there was an icon with a dude hitting a hornets nest, cuz Im sure I just did..LOL!!!

Just my opinion

Wow, I never knew that the manufacturers stamped out thousands of extra parts to sell 35-40 years later.  :stirpot:

I personally would buy from Shermans mainly because I can go and pick the order up and save on the shipping as I'm a tight ass when it comes to money!  :dunno:
