OK, Don't Laugh

A few weeks ago I hurt my back. This is really an aggravation of an decades-old injury (in which I was defending my fiance from being raped, and no, in 20-20 hindsight, it wasn't worth it  ). Anyway, this round has been particularly bad, and one thing that's exacerbating it is spending four hours a day in my little Hyundai clown car.

I'm looking for something of a 70s vintage that has some legroom so I can drive to and from work without my knees jacked up to my chin. In a perfect world (this is where "Don't Laugh" comes in to play) this would be a Gremlin. I've had two, and they were some of the best cars I've ever owned (80 Capri being the worst). They're dependable, if well set up they'll handle well, and they have some room for me.

I'm in not huge hurry. On the other hand, I'm short on cash, so I've got to be careful of what I'm getting, if indeed I can afford anything. Again, in a perfect world, the body would be reasonably solid, and the drivetrain would be very solid (especially, the carb would have no issues).

I'm open to other suggestions. I'd love a Jeep CJ or early Wrangler, but I think they'll be out of my range as well. I've got to stay with something 6 cylinder or less for mileage sake.

How about a '70's Dodve van with a /6 or 318?

I bought a set of slotted mags off a guy that had a WICKED (IMO) nice van.  I wish I had pics of it.  It was a mid-late 70's van, short wheel base, 15" slotted rims, B-5 blue with a flat black hood and across the hood in a diaganol pattern ala Plymouth Duster on the hood was written "340".  It actually did have a 340 in it.  Because it was a SWB van, it really didn't look much longer than a Dodge Caravan but it was mean looking.  It would be really easy to get in and out of since it isn't low to the ground.  You could get one with a /6 in it and have decent milage and lots of room.   

The late 70's Charger/Mirada/Magnum cars are comfy and some come with a /6....Dodge Aspen?

Had a 98 model...best riding seats I've ever experienced....17-city 21-hwy  Put over 100K on it & sold it to my uncle 4-years ago, they drive it all over the place, AL-FL, FL-MD & back.

That's an interesting idea. I do have to be able to park in a pretty small parking garage, but with a short wheelbase it might work. Also reminds me of something else I've always wanted: VW camper van. When I travel I could take my hotel with me.

My brother has had a string of these, and he swears by them. Thing is, his modus operandi is to buy very cheap, then work on them every night so he can drive to work the next day.

I used to work for a Suzuki dealer in the mid 80s when these things got big. Even with a 4 cylinder they couldn't hit 60 mph
